Depaul, Denison, Mich st, NYU.

I cannot decide between these four schools. Each one has a positive and a negative going for or against it. Denison is close to home and unexpensive for me, but small. Michigan state gives a traditional college feel. NYU is a fantastic school in a great location but gives me a lot of debt. Depaul is relatively inexpensive and in a great location, but it is catholic and I'm gay so I dont know if I would be accepted, what should I do?

How much debt would you have if you went to NYU?

Even if it’s not much I would choose MSU. It’s huge so you will have a lot of different types of people there and tons of opportunities. I think it was ranked the #1 public school for study abroad if that means anything to you. I think you’d be accepted at MSU by most, but you have to remember that it’s a state school and a lot of kids will be coming from rural Michigan (not the most accepting place to be). If being accepted by nearly EVERYONE is important to you, I’d go to NYU. I don’t know a lot about Depaul or Dennison though.

NYU’s debt is like house payment big, somewhere around 100k, although I think it is a little less, the rest of the schools would give me around 30k. Thanks for helping though.

any suggestion would be helpful

I graduated from MSU. (Both B.A. and M.A and was OOS)
Both academically and socially, it was a great place to be. I would highly recommend it for a wonderful college experience.
GO GREEN!!!

Have you visited all of your choices? I’m not getting a complete read on what atmosphere you prefer, and you didn’t mention your area of study, which is a huge point in making your decision.

For instance, if you visited DePaul, did you realize that it is less than a mile from the heart of Chicago’s (traditionally) gay community? DePaul is pretty liberal for a Catholic U. What is more of a drawback there is that, while some of the schools are top-notch, others are mediocre. In general, DePaul attracts students who are a full step below NYU.

Denison is more conservative than DePaul, to my way of thinking. It is a traditional LAC with a big frat element. Two of my best friends graduated from there and loved it, but I wonder if much has changed since they attended.

While NYU seems to be your best match, that much debt is a crippling thing. Even if you wanted to try, you have no assurance that you’ll be able to float enough loans to graduate. There is a post on this board from a NYU grad who is underemployed and debt-ridden. It is a sobering piece that you should read before making your decision.

NYU all the way! NYU can get you into such a great school!

NYU is NOT worth all that debt. I think the decision is between MSU and DePaul. East Lansing is a college town, big U experience. Depaul is an urban campus and is more “NYU-ish” that way. It is a tough choice. I think I would opt for State, but living in Chicago would be hard to pass on. It really depends what you want, the traditional college town experience or the Chicago experience?

NYU is definitely not worth the debt. If you want to live in NYC later, you can do so in a way that MAKES money, not sucks it out of you. I’ve heard nice things about Denison. Don’t know about the other ones, but most colleges are pretty gay-friendly these days from what I’ve seen (don’t think I’d recommend Brigham Young, though!). Thank god, your generation seems to be much more tolerant and natural about people of all persuasions.

DePaul or Michigan State - not NYU or Denison. (I think DePaul is more gay friendly than Denison.) Don’t take on that debt for NYU.

Interesting that you take what most people feel is Denison’s strength and make it a weakness. Small in this case means individual attention and small classes.

This has changed a great deal. The level of frats has gone way down and they are no longer resident on campus. And my gay DD1 might disagree about which is more conservative.

Thanks guys!

thank you for clearing up the Denison stereotype of conservatism because I know they try to fight that.

One last bumb before I decide

CHRISTmas this is hard

DePaul is great and the students from our h.s. who go there really love it there. A great school in a great location and it sounds like, for you, a good price.

Go with where you felt most at home, but - if you are accepting votes, I will put in a vote for DePaul.
