Congratulations @Chinookpass! What does he want to study? Where did he ED?
He was admitted in International Studies and they also have a Global Diplomacy major. ED is American. He loved the campus and visit at American, though to me they are more cold feeling if that makes sense in their online presence and comments in the IG feed. The administration vs the faculty. He liked it better than GW on his visit and Georgetown is too big of a reach.
My D has also applied to GW and American, but RD. Best of luck to your son
Good luck to your daughter too. Did she use ED or keeping options open?
Thanks, she didnāt apply ED anywhere. Just EA when possible, or RD. She is very relaxed and confident now that she has 2 great acceptances that she can be serious about once all decisions are back.
D22 was accepted to the Honors Program:), got an email this morning. Looks like a wonderful community
Was honors a separate application?
Yes, when she received her acceptance, she was invited to apply to the Honors Program and the 3+3 Law Program. So she applied to Honors and heard back a week later.
DS in with 18.5k per year merit! 3.2 UW & 1300 SAT
When did your DS apply? We are still waiting to hear.
I graduated from Georgetown in International Affairs. Strongly recommend that wherever he goes that he considers transferring there. The program is about as good as it gets for that major. There is a reason why 40% of the diplomatic corp come out of that school.
October 30th. He got everything in before Halloween.
Heās done summer camps at Georgetown for MUN, stayed on campus, etc. Ten or fifteen years ago his stats would have been competitive for admission (search old CC posts, it is insane how things have changed recently, not even going back to my day) but not now and heās not a legacy. Georgetown has a great school for international affairs, but not even close to the only way into foreign service. Commenting to apply (or transfer in this case) to a highly selective school when DePaul was a safety/likely is not particularly helpful. ETA - Iām so tired at this point of people saying āgo to Georgetown.ā
Go back and read my post again, please.
Even a casual reading should prove that (1) I never suggested he apply there and (2) I never said it was the only way to get into the foreign service.
I did suggest that he should consider transferring there, the assumption being that he would desire to attend. I knew several folks that did it and they were very successful in school and in their chosen careers.
I see your son also applied to American and GW, both of which have very good programs. Excellent choices for anyone interested in IA. I wish him the very best!
Hi, I donāt need to re-read your post, and yes, realized you suggested transferring vs applying, but didnāt think it was worth rewriting my response as pretty self-explanatory. It wasnāt helpful and came off as if this was something we hadnāt considered. I originally commented in response to DePaul (loved the campus and bet you will too if you end up visiting) and Iām rather fatigued at this point of well-meaning people suggesting reach schools as if this wasnāt something considered. No hard feelings. Good luck to your senior too.
No hard feelings at all. I agree with you - if you have done your homework you know the information and know what is best for your child. This is my second time going through this process and I am counting the days when it is over!
Very best wishes to you and your child!
Congrats!
My DS23 will be applying next fall for the their game design program too. His stats will make DePaul a reach though. The ACT will make it or break it for him as his gpa and ECs arenāt doing it for him now. Heās also looking at the game design programs at Webster Univ and Bradley Univ.
Did anyone receive the Future Forward award? What do you all know about it?
Yes! My D22 was awarded it as well. I actually sat in on a virtual session about it that was geared towards parents. I was impressed. Itās selective, but they did not say exactly what they are looking for in candidates, other than saying they want a representation of different kinds of students from different kinds of majors. The main parts of it are completing self-paced career modules on a computer. They are enriching as far as helping the students explore and prepare for careers. Getting the students thinking and learning about details. It introduces the students to resources available at DePaul that are professional and enriching. It also has social in-person events for Future Forward students. After completing the program, students receive a $3,000 grant off of their sophomore year costs.
I remember really liking what I had learned on the info session about it.
For reference, my D22 was EA, has a 3.9 uw and 4.9 w gpa, and was accepted into Honors Program. I did not get the feeling this program was only for Honors Program kids. She currently has a Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies major chosen but if she matriculates, she will be switching to Womenās Studies. She has a pre law focus.
My son received it also and is not an honors recepiant. He is very artsy. Intended Game Design major.
