Oh, fishbowl, I know you were supporting me, I wasn't trying to say anything against you, I just wanted to clear up that quote you posted because it makes the cut seem really..different than it is (maybe because the person transferd before the end of the year? I don't know). I know from personal experiance how hard it can be, and I wouldn't want to have people think that it is as easy as they made it out to be, because that wouldn't be fair. It's best to know, right?

No doubt. It's refreshing to see somebody tell it like it is without all the whitewashing some seem to do with some of the other schools.

Dear CKP,
I DO hope that you were not responding to me, becuase if you were, you totally missed the mark. I in NO WAY encourage "back-stabbing", but in any situation, if there is a choice between you and someeon else, almost everyone would do whatever was necessary to make sure that they were the one that got the "goal". The other readers seemed to understand where I was coming from and realized that is just the way it is in any business, even if you are a receptionist and want to move up to executive secretary. I guess that's why they always have those silly "who would you toss out of the lifeboat" questions in school psych or religion classes(Boy, did I HATE those classes!)! It's just a sad fact of life and I watch it go on every day, even among high school kids jockying for "teacher's pet" position with the hope that they will stand a better chance of being cast in the school musical. It would be nice if we were all altruistic and honest, but there are very few Ghandis and Mother Theresas in the world...
I hope we've exhausted this topic by now and I am glad that I have learned something that I didn't know about a school. That is the purpose of these Forums-to share information- and we seem to do it well.

I still think you haven't realized what I was trying to say (and I even included a paragraph about how I know you would encourage it ect.). What I was getting at was that WE DO NOT STAB EACHOTHER IN THE BACK. WE HELP EACHOTHER!!!!

Ok, I guess I am confused as I really felt attacked, ckp, and don't feel that I deserved it; if that was not yur intent, then I apologize for being over sensitive.I wanted you to know that I DO NOT and WOULD NOT encourage back-stabbing, but I also have lived a long time, been a part of theatre for more years than I care to count(!) and know that it is human nature to want to win and be the best. If there are two people trying for the same part you(a metaphorical "You",please)you know that you are going to go out there and give that audition everything you have and not hold back, even if you are up against your dearest friend. It's just natural, and theatre is competitive at every level.
It is impressive to know that, in your program, you truly work together. I am quite hopeful and you and your classmates take those values out into the world when you you graduate. You sound like a very impressive young person who truly cares about others and I commend you for that,
One thing I would like to know and I guess you would be able to answer me- what happens to the kids that are "cut" from the program? Are they able to to transfer to another department within the school or are they just "cut loose" to find a new placement? Can you tell I feel sorry for them? I just hate the thought of 26 kids shell shocked and not knowing what to do! Can you reassure me please?

Anyone notice that the head of the school of theatre at DePaul is now officially taking questions at CC? I am guessing this person has read some of this on this thread, and I hope the cut policy will be addressed....I was thinking of asking but really, that's the policy, so I think it's accept it or don't apply. My kid chose not to apply, and I feel doctorjohn has expressed well why I am glad he didn't!

I noticed and I prompted the question. Its obvious from this thread that it is hurting the quality of their applicants. It raises some serious questions. Such as, if it is not about the money which is a very plausible explanation, what is it about? And, I really dont want to hear the bogus argument that acting is a competitive world In terms of stabbing people in the back how could their not be a divide between students? That doesnt necessarily mean stab in the back but it would be hard to feel like an ensemble when you look around the room wanting to be the 50% who get to come back next year

Lulu'smomma, I don't want to offend you, and I understand where you are coming from, it's just I got frustrated because I continued to hear the same misconseptions, so I hope now we understand eachother more. I'm really not sure how many slots of theatre arts they give out, but I know they offer some people the option to go into theatre arts, and everyone (unless they failed all their academic classes or something) can continue at DePaul.

Some of my best friends got cut. It's inevitable, if you got close to people. A lot of people go the Columbia College in Chicago and have a lot of sucess there. They are talented and wonderful people...like I said, one of my professor there had gotten cut from the program.

ckp,

Just a bit of a side note to you, I believe you have handled these inquizative minds very well. Programs with evaluation components are difficult to understand for those on the outside looking in.

Good job ckp!! ;)

SUE aka 5pants

Thanks, CKP for trying to understand. I feel a bit better now, knowing that there are viable alternatives for those who get cut from the program!
