My daughter is considering both DePaul & Loyola in Chicago (also U of Michigan & U of Pittsburgh). I'd appreciate thoughts on any of these, pros, cons, etc. She doesn't know where she wants to go or what she wants to major in.

Hey Moxymom,

My D looked at both Loyola and Depaul before choosing (and attending) Depaul. Has your daughter visited either school? Although they're both in Chicago (sort of), they have different campus "vibes."

Depaul is located in Lincoln Park, a beautiful Chicago neighborhood, and the school prides itself in being "part" of the city. Loyola has a wonderful campus right on the lake, although the neighborhood feels more "isolated" from the city itself. (Actually, our tour guide at Loyola mentioned this twice - that the campus is "very separate" from the city. My D really wanted a true urban campus, so for her this was a turn-off - but YMMV.) My daughter felt that Loyola was more overtly Catholic, whereas Depaul did not seem overtly religious (even though it is the largest Catholic school in the country and does require religion classes for graduation); again, this may or may not be important to you and your child, but my daughter preferred the more liberal feel of DePaul.

My D was interested in a business major, and the Depaul tour had a great introduction to the deparment. On balance, though, my H and I liked both schools for different reasons and would have been happy if our D had chosen either one. By the way, DD is now a freshman and loves her school and the city of Chicago. PM me if you have any questions about these schools!

hey, i am applying to depaul, pitt, northwestern and loyola chicago.
here’s my order of choices:
northwestern (very slim chance i’ll get in…i’m not even getting my hopes up. its pretty unrealistic.)
pitt
depaul
loyola chicago.
(i am also applying to BU, NYU, Xavier, and some others)
i too want an urban campus, and even though northwestern isn’t in the city exactly its such a goood school, if i got in i would go in a heartbeat. anyway pitt is my top out of the 3 left, because i just really liked it when i visited. the tour guides were really helpful, students seemed happy, (its affordable. haha.) pittsburgh is a nice city – not as large as chicago obviously, but still has a lot of the great resources that a major city has. plus i’m from philadelphia so i feel as though pittsburgh is far away enough that i can see what its like to be on my own, but close enough where i can go home in an emergency. also what impressed me about pitt was that many of their advisors were willing to assist me in the college process even if i didn’t choose to go to pittsburgh. also i would say that for most things pitt is a better school than depaul and def better than loyola chicago. like scout59 said, loyola chicago isn’t exactly in the city…just something to consider.

good luck to your daughter!

anyone willing to chance me?

thaanks! (:

Toured Loyola last weekend – campus looks good – views of Lake Michigan from the library and the admissions office will blow you away; and biking south toward the city thru the park looks like a good thing. Just for the benefit of those who are concerned it may be “too catholic” – I asked – there are about 12 Jesuits on the faculty of over 500.
