My daughter has received admission to Depaul and University of Denver, both with their top merit scholarships (Chancellor & Presidential respectively).
She is interested in public policy + Economics.
With the covid situation, we have not been able to visit either of these colleges. (We are in california, btw).
Would greatly appreciate any advice/recommendations between the two.
I’m not overly familiar with Depaul but it’s larger, it’s religiously affiliated with Catholocism (that doesn’t mean religious but Denver definitely is not religious). I think both are in near/downtown. Denver has higher stats…so likely a better pedigree school although most probably wouldn’t know that (i.e. employers). What major? The biggest at Depaul are liberal arts and accounting. At Denver, finance, psychology, and international relations.
In the end, do some virtual tours…see if they have student panels, etc.and make your best decision. The truth is - even if you find the “right” school, you could have a bad roommate etc. and it could blow up. Or you can go to not your favorite school and meet your BFF and love it. You just don’t know.
Go with your best gut feel - and hope for the best.
While I think DePaul may be the largest Catholic university in the country, and it certainly pushes its students to aspire to do better for all, it’s really a school with a very strong alumni following in the Chicago area. Former long time Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley went to both undergrad and law school there, and you see DePaul alumni strongly represented in many professions throughout the region. I’m not familiar with the academics of DePaul vs. University of Denver, but what kind of college experience does your daughter want? DePaul is in a beautiful part of Chicago, the Lincoln Park neighborhood, which is close to the lake and where a lot of millennials live, and only about a 15 minute train ride from downtown, where many of the internships are.
