What's the area/city like?

i thinks its 41 in the us news lac rankings. the town is kinda crappy really. i havent gotten to see all of it, i’ve only visited but i am going there in the fall, and what i saw wasnt much. theres a walmart, some restaurants, and the basics. its nothing special rly. the downtown was alright. its a small town though so you cant expect much more, but the campus was great

Cool. I didn’t realize it ranked that high.

Are there more than one DePauw’s in the USA?

I remember applying a school named DePauw or similar of the them in high school (one sent me an application, hat, etc., so I mailed it back). If it’s the same school, I remember being impressed by them. They sent a handwritten letter back after I told them I wasn’t going there. They offered some good merit scholarships, sent me hats/shirts, etc.

You might be thinking of DePaul

Hm… how does DePauw rank nationally?
I saw it’s ranking on the liberal arts colleges list (I think it was 43). But, what about national.

Thanks, I looked up DePaul, and I don’t remember the school being in Chicago. Are there any others similarly spelled?

[DePauw University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](<a href=“DePauw University - Wikipedia”>DePauw University - Wikipedia)
i think remember reading something saying that depauw is no longer going to qualify for us news rankings. i think it was a group of colleges that decided together the peer review wasnt fair or something so none of them can be ranked anymore.

Don’t know about Depauw’s US News Rankings, but just heard on the radio that it is ranked as the 10th top party school in the U.S. First was the University of Georgia, Second was Ohio University. Is Depauw really that much of a party school?? That’s the kind of news that will send the admissions office into a tail spin.

it does have a big greek scene so i bet. they still have a good academic rating, and i think they’ve been considered a big party school for awhile so its not anything new really.

I wouldn’t mind attending a “party school,” so long as it has the caliber/reputation of reputation and academics to back it up.

I loved how DePauw personalized their responses, sent baseball caps, etc. It was a nice touch.

DePauw is a good liberal arts school. My son didn’t look at it because they don’t offer a degree in Business.

Regarding DePauw being a party school–this is what I can share. My son visited DePauw twice last year as a senior in highschool. The first time was a day long visit–did the tour, sat in on some classes, ate luch with a student. He liked the school a lot–and a previosu poster is right–it is a ver pretty campus. He went back in April for an overnight–and stayed with a student in his dorm. His “roommate” asked if he wanted to go to a party; he said he thought my son should see the party scene at DePauw, to get a feel for the school and its social life. I won’t bore you with the details–I am out of college for almost 30 years now, but the stuff my son told me he saw was well beyond what happened at the parties I attended. My son is hardly a party animal, probably closer to a bookworm, and the whole thing really turned him off, and he decided to go elsewehre. He and I were both appreicative his “roommate” took him to the party. I think if that had not happened, he would be at DePauw now. To be clear, I am not trying to bad mouth the school–I think you can get a very fine education there. But of the schols my son looked at, it had the most “intense” party scene. If you are the work hard/party hard sort of guy/gal, I think it is a good match.

Stephenandrew,
I would be interested to hear how DePauw’s party scene differed from any other school’s. My daughter is also not a partier, but I’m not sure if there are any schools where there aren’t wild parties. Can you give any insight?

DePauw just mailed out gym bags to accepted students … Must have changed the ball caps from a few years ago.
Thanks!

theres a lot of parties here, and a lot of people go. she could find friends that dont party, but i only know like 2 people that dont drink, and they still go to parties sometimes.

Honestly, while DePauw is a “party school” (I’m not going to deny it), it’s not like anyone will discriminate against you if you don’t party. There were a couple people in my mentor group (an excellent program that all freshmen students participate in to help them get adjusted throughout the year) that had no desire to go out to fraternity parties, the main party scene on campus. They formed a group of really close friends who watch movies together or help each other out with homework or drive to Indy or Plainfield on weekends to hang out. The one time I did see them out, no one was being mean or discriminating them for their choice to not drink or go out on weekends.

Another thing to note is that even DePauw students view the ranking as somewhat of a joke. For example, on my Winter Term trip, we would joke about how we needed to show the foreign country we were in how to “DePauwty” but it wasn’t like we were getting belligerently drunk. My class (2013) joked about how we were going to try to get to number 1 by the end of our four years here, especially since DePauw moved up 5 places from last year. But it’s really not that big of a deal if you aren’t a big partier.

Thanks, CitizenReporter! It’s nice to have you on the board for information. What do freshman do first semester when they are not allowed to go to fraternities?

Well, freshmen are allowed to go on to fraternity property first semester, but there is a specific schedule they follow. It used to be that freshmen weren’t allowed to go to frats on weekends until after fall break, but the rule changed this year to about a month earlier due to freshmen breaking the old rule so much that Interfraternity Council needed a way to control it.
I’m a sophomore, and for the first two months, we had dorm parties. Some floors were known for being “the drinking floors” where you could go and get alcohol and the RAs wouldn’t care. In my dorm, we would sometimes go to those floors or we would meet up in my dorm’s lobby and hang out. We would have dance parties, play Catchphrase, and just get to know each other. All my friends from my dorm freshmen year and I miss the dorm parties! They were so much fun! We also would go out to eat, or watch movies or sports games together. There are even some dance parties for the freshmen to get to know each other - and depending on the weekend - they’re pretty well attended.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask more questions or PM me if you want!
