In the FAFSA, a question asks: For 2012, have you completed your IRS income tax return or another tax return?

As an unemployed student, how should I answer this question? Do I provide my parents tax return info or do I just choose the third option: not gonna file?

Thank you

How old are you?

If you’re a dependent student, you supply the parents’ tax info in the parents section. In the student section, you would put that you’re not going to file (because you don’t have income).

Thank you for a quick response. I am 24. I was confused by the part right below where it says that I can choose if I want to provide parents information… Saying that I should if the college require it… which it don’t, so I clicked no… So there were no questions regarding my parents.

Oh, you’re 24. You’re independent.

You don’t use your parents’ tax info then. That request is only for some schools (like law/med schools) that ask for parent info for independent students.

Even though your parents’ claim you on their taxes, you’re still independent for FAFSA purposes because of age.

However, since you don’t have any income, you’re going to be asked how you pay for food, gas, etc. Kelsmom would know what you’re supposed to do. Maybe you’re supposed to put how much money you get from your parents???

You do NOT put what your parents pay on your behalf on the income line for YOU. You would put “will not file” as your status, and your income will be $0.

On the FAFSA, you should already have indicated that you are going to be 24 or are 24. The prompt for putting parent info will come up…asking you IF you want to include it. Answer NO.
