Dependent status for students and new tax law

For those who just used their 4th year of AOC, you are not done! One of the provisions of the new tax code extends it to a 5th year, where you will get half of the credit.

Even tax professionals such as myself are still digesting all the changes, and the reality is we won’t know how the IRS is going to interpret certain parts until the IRS tells us. The dependency exemption is $0, so we don’t know if that will now mean adult dependents who are not full time students will no longer qualify, or how that will work.

No. This was a part of the House proposal for the new tax law, but it did not make it out of conference. The four year limitation per student on the American Opportunity Credit remains in effect.
