So do I just need my SSN, driver's license, and parents' tax return if I'm under 18, unemployed, and dependent, or do I need all that other stuff too?

These instructions are for the FAFSA that people would have completed beginning January 1, 2010. For the FAFSA that you will be completing beginning January 1, 2011, you will need your parents’ tax forms for 2010, or if they aren’t yet available, estimated information. You will need asset information for both you and your parents, so yes, you’ll need all that other stuff, too.

OP, yes you’ll need any or all documents on the list depending on your family situation but if you are a senior in high school planning on attending college next fall the FAFSA will not be available until January 2011. Some colleges will give an estimated financial aid with an EA or ED application and will ask for estimated numbers so read the info from your colleges carefully about what processes you need to follow. I do believe at least one parent needs a pin and needs to review and sign the parent portion of the FAFSA even if the student fills it out so keep that in mind and ask your parents for assistance if you need it as they will need to review and sign anyway if you are a dependent student.

Okay, thanks to both of you. I appreciate it!
