So, yesterday I checked my mail at school and my dad had forwarded me an acceptance packet I got at home last week! (wish he had told me over the phone, but whatever). Anyhow, the $150 deposit is due by May 11. I called the college and asked them if the deadline could be extended so I could make an informed decision, but they wouldn't budge. Is it bad to call another school I've applied to and ask if they have my decision done could they please disclose it early? They say on their website that if you mail them the decision letter 2 weeks before the deadline they'll try to accomodate you, however, I just got this info!!! Do you think I can offer to fax the letter w/a cover letter! I really don't want to have to waste $150!!! Will this hurt my chances if they haven't completed my file?

sometimes you just have to pony up the cash. Plus $150 is actually on the low-end of deposits. i.e., Cornell's deposit amount is $400

If it makes you feel better you can look at it this way: Maybe you won't get into that other school and would have submitted the deposit for this school anyways...

So it would hurt my chances with school #2 if I called and explained the school #1 situation? $150 might not relatively be a large deposit, but for me it is absolutely a big sum. Thanks foxdie! for your comment-

Okay! I get it...$150 is relatively not a lot...but I'd still prefer to not spend it if I don't have to- So, does anyone know if calling and explaining the situation to school #2 and asking for an early release would have any impact on my application? THANK YOU!!!

I'm in the same situation but I called the school I'm waiting on and they wouldn't tell me my decision, so I'm just hoping to get an extension from the school I'm in to so that I don't have to fork over their $400 deposit yet.

I hate to say this - but just give the deposit. I have already tried calling the schools and explaining my situation and they won't budge. So I say - hedge your bets and pay the money. I know its a crappy situation, but its neccessary. I know I am going to pay the UVa deposit - even though I am waiting on 3 schools still. It sucks but whatever.

I would say to pay it, and then as soon as you make a decision to go somewhere else, call and let them know you're not coming and ask politely that someone be admitted in your place off the waitlist. Most letters say that the deposit is non-refundable, but after I told UVa that I had to send in the deposit before I got my Vandy letter, they sent it back to me!

I don't think it will hurt your chances at #2 to call and see if they can give you a decision. Depends on the school whether they will. Just like it depends on the school whether they'll give an extension - your #1 wouldn't budge. Last year, S got an extension from one school; no dice from a second.

$150 is fairly cheap peace of mind to have a place at #1. If you get into #2, see if they'll refund, as someone else suggested.
