My d has heard from some of her safeties but not her top choices. Has any parents put deposit money on safeties to ensure a place and first choice housing while they wait to see if their student gets into their top choice??

Yes, we did. My daughter applied to some reach schools so we went ahead and deposited money at the safety to ensure housing in the dorm she wants.

Yes, absolutley! It's the smart thing to do.

Yes, We did it and I am so glad we did. My S will get his top choice of dorm for a school we sent a deposit in December. Of course it is refundable if he chooses to go elsewhere.

We just waited until we had heard from all schools & S was sure what he wanted to do. He got his 1st choice in housing even tho he didn't send in the deposit until months after many did. For most schools, deposits are non-refundable, so you have to weigh how much it means to you & your kiddo to have 1st choice housing in a safety school. Double-check on refundability of the deposit, so you don't have a surprise when you don't get it back.

we early deposited for the only school on S's list that had housing issues. When he chose to go elsewhere, we got the deposit back by acting before the cutoff date for refunds.

Schools with housing shortages often are very clear that it is fine, advisable really, to make the deposit to ensure housing and/or improving housing choices.

Go ahead and do it. Many of them will refund and, if not, it is probably good insurance and peace of mind.
