Hi, new here. My S was accepted to AMDA, who wanted the deposit by 2/14. I told them he was going to Unifieds and could we wait a while on that? They gave us until 3/15. I understand we won't hear about BoCo until 4/1. My son's first choice is BoCo, and he thinks his audition went very well. What to do? I can't afford 2 deposits!

Hmmm, AMDA holds auditions all over the place (even Korea!) through April and into May, so I wonder why they are pressuring you for deposit so fast? As you are probably aware, the NACAC standard deadline for decisions is May 1. Programs that ask for decisions prior to that date are outside NACAC standards - but there are some that do it, as has been noted in other recent threads. Perhaps if you call AMDA admissions, asked about their compliance with NACAC standards and explained the situation you can get an additional extension…

Wait. AMDA will be happy to take your money whenever.

I agree with Walker 1194. Not sure how much of a deposit they are asking for but it is usually not that much.

Well, they said the deposit was “refundable until May 1,” but that seems pretty ridiculous.

Point Park had a similar arrangement last year (2011-2012)(not sure about now). We sent in the deposit in December when S2 was accepted and when he chose a different school in March, they sent the deposit back in full. The deposit held the spot. I know that there was big controversy last year when acceptances were not guaranteed until deposits were made at PP. If you can afford it, and the school will refund the deposit befor 5/1, I’d send it in.

Like Nccpdad, a refundable deposit was sent to Point Park to hold a space. Point Park traditionally overfills its class, and students who wait to deposit risk moving from accepted to waitlist status. Not sure how I feel about that…but that’s the way that particular school plays the yield game. When she chose another school, it was no problem to get the deposit back.

I would check with AMDA to see if your son’s space in the class is being held until May 1, or if he could risk being moved to a waitlist status. (Assuming AMDA is a school he is ready and willing to attend, and the financials, etc. work out that it would be a possibility…).

As an aside, we did receive the Point Park deposit and d happily moved on to her school of choice. (This was 2011.) She was happy to think that another student would be able to attend now that she opened up the space. (And the moment she committed to her other school, she contacted PP…it’s agonizing to those who wait…). In July (actually, as she was coming home from freshman orientation with her much-loved chosen school), she received a letter from PP, offering her the slot back into the MT program there, and offering her an additional (quite generous) talent scholarship on top of their original offer. No idea if others who made similar decisions received that, or if her yes…no decision made the PP folks sit up and pay attention. Our only thinking was that PP was a contender, and didn’t want to risk not having a slot if that was the final choice.

Long story short – find out if AMDA will guarantee his space in the class whether you deposit or not, decide where that school falls on his list of possibilities, and keep all documentation if you do choose to deposit, and then later make a different choice

Best of luck to him in the process!

I’m with Walker1194 on this one. From the evidence at hand, i.e., their long list of auditions occuring in April and into May all over the country and beyond, I don’t think that AMDA necessarily follows the same pattern that you see from more typical audition-based programs.

Yes, it is true, AMDA will take your money whenever - do not give it another thought. They are not part of the academic consortium that has developed something of a time line and protocol regarding acceptance/deposit/commitment issues. Best of luck with your BoCo application.

Yes I agree with the above. AMDA accepts people right up until the beginning of the fall term without deadlines. I would not even think about it, given the choice between them and BOCO.

I give…what is AMDA?

The school Rachel from Glee is going to in NY! ( only kidding)

[About AMDA’s New York Campus - AMDA](<a href=“AMDA | College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts”>AMDA | The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, New York)

The chief thing to note about AMDA is its accreditation. They are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre. This is their chief distinction when comparing degrees - for instance, BOCO is accredited by the New England Association of Colleges and Schools, which means its BFA program is FULLY recognized by other academic institutions of higher learning. Do lots of research and ask lots of questions. Caveat emptor, I suppose.

shacherry - I know you where just kidding - but I do not want to confuse anyone. The character of Rachel Berry in GLEE attends NYADA. NYADA does not exist, it is a fictional program created for the program. Believe it or not, this has caused some folks a bit of confusion.

Yes, one must be very careful with accreditation. If a student attends a school that is not regionally accredited and he decides to transfer, it is likely the credits will not transfer. Likewise, if one decides to continue on to grad school the undergraduate degree may not be recognized.

Mtdog71, your totally right I was just joking and it could be cause for confusion.

Shacherry, I have to say, that TODAY, I very much appreciated your jest thank you
OP, hang in there, Be a little more assertive with AMDA, tell them you are very iterested but since you know there are posted auditions far later in the season, they are going to need to wait for your decision.
