Deposit Waiver?

Hi, I'm posting for one of my friends who doesn't have internet/computer at home and he doesn't have enough money to pay for his deposit. :(

Is there a way he can waive his UVa deposit? He's gotten a lot of scholarships and will probably go to UVa for very little to free tuition, but all that might be ruined by the tuition deposit! I think he is also an Echols scholar.

Could someone please tell me how he can do this or if UVa even allows a waiver? He used a waiver to pay for the application fee so he should be eligible. Thank you so much from two future UVa '15ers!

Tell your friend to call admissions and ask (434-982-3200). I don’t know specifically about UVa, however I do know it is common for universities to waive the deposit in the event it causes a hardship. If the student received a waiver for their application fee this would be a good indication that they will work with him.

Good for you for helping your friend try to get the information he needs! I’d just go straight to the source. If he needs to contact anyone else I’m sure admissions would be able to give him the correct contact. Good luck to both of you!

blueiguana has given excellent advice. Please tell your friend to not wait on this. This is not something that should wait until May 1 to get resolved. Your friend does not want to risk losing a spot because of the deposit issue. Call or email first thing Monday morning to admissions to clarify what department needs to be contacted to resolve this. Good luck. You’re a good friend.

My friend said he did not use a UVa waiver, but instead he used an Access Waiver to pay for his college apps. He was wondering if that matters to UVa, since UVa might not know that it was an Access Waiver. He and I are very thankful for the advice!

@ VAResi, I doubt the source of the waiver will be an issue. The best thing to do is call and ask for guidance. I would assume your friend has put in FAFSA/Profile information needed for financial aid. This would also give proof that the deposit is a hardship.

As sevmom states, don’t put this off. While UVa may be willing to give a waiver, it may take a few days to get information needed. He doesn’t want to be up against the May 1 deadline.

Did your friend receive his financial aid package yet?

I ask because I received a waiver without even having to ask for one. However, my EFC was 0 (I also got a full ride from their financial aid program). If your friend is in dire need of aid, you can call the office or they’ll be able to tell based on his EFC.

Ask him if he received his aid or if he has submitted all of his tax documents for evaluation. If he has NOT received his aid package yet, they probably are not done processing it yet and he’ll want to hold off on paying the deposit. In the email they sent me they stated that they would not be able to reimburse the $400 deposit if I already paid it (luckily I didn’t).

Here’s the exact phrasing of my email:

"Congratulations on your on your admission to the University of Virginia! I am writing today to let you know that you qualify to have your $400 admission deposit waived if you choose to accept our offer of admission.

To apply your deposit waiver and accept your offer of admission today, simply:

· Log on to the Student Information System (SIS) here.

· Scroll down to click “View Decision”

· Click on the “Accept Admission” button

Please do not pay your fee when the system directs you to pick a method of payment for the tuition deposit. We will simply process your waiver once you have clicked the “Accept Admission” button. You may continue to see the message “You owe $400” for up to 2-3 business days, but please do not take further action.

Please note, if you pay the fee before receiving this message, we will unfortunately be unable to reimburse your payment. I am happy to be available by email and phone should you have any questions or concerns. Watch for more information from us about our Days on the Lawn programs, possible contact from current students and more – all of which will help you explore UVA and decide if it is the place for you!

Best wishes as you finalize your college plans"

I wish you and your friend luck!

Thanks, coolpig! I was just about the explain that the full AccessUVa award includes the deposit. :)

Congratulations, by the way!
