Hi, everyone. As an international student, I have been accepted to American University in Bulgaria (that is accredited in the New England Association of Schools and Colleges or smth like that). The acceptance letter I have got states that in order to confirm my place I have to deposit N $ by the 23rd of March. I would do that with great pleasure, but what if I get into some other school after that (US colleges release their decisions at the very end of March, as you all know) and I want to attend it. Can I choose that school despite the deposit to Bulgarian school? So, basically, I want to know if such deposit is binding or not?

You will have to contact the university and ask them about it.

In most universities I have checked, though, the deposit is refundable as long as you tell the university before a certain deadline.

So it is best to check their website/contact the university for further information since it varies.

Hell with the money. Will I have an opportunity to say “no” to the university after submitting the deposit?

If you are unsure, ask the university!

On the one hand, it is hard to imagine that a university could force you to enroll. On the other hand, there may be contractual commitments that exceed the deposit - for example, you might commit to paying the first year’s worth of tuition, regardless of whether you actually show up on campus.

An American university in the US you would not do that - you might lose your deposit but you are free to go elsewhere. However, American universities in the US also do not require you to submit a deposit before May 1, so who knows what rules your university is playing by.

I won’t pay tuition etc. coz I am on full scholarship, so I guess I will be okay:)
