Depositing at more than one school

Anyone done this to get more time to decide?

Isn't it unethical? The college I deposited at said they would revoke admission if you did it.

skp: i have no real 1st hand knowledge about this, but I can't imagine that being the case.....the deposit is not a binding contract and with all of the waitlists this year, I think it would be unethical for the schools themselves to revoke admission...

You obviously lose your deposit, but this is not ED.......

Heron:If it is impossible for you to visit before May 1, and that is why you can't decide, you certainly have a case to double deposit...If it's just uncertainty, another month will probably not help you, but further paralyze you......

It's considered unethical...my college counselor told us that we cannot double deposit, it's unethical, the only time that it's appropriate to do that is if you were waiting on a waitlist school and ended up getting accepted to the waitlist school and go there, losing your first deposit.

Students are expected to send a deposit to only one college. Double-depositing deprives other students of the opportunity to be admitted from the wait list. It's unethical. It can also backfire:Students who double-deposit may wind up losing their spaces at both schools.

Here's last year's thread on the subject. <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/313750-deposits-two-different-schools.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/313750-deposits-two-different-schools.html</a></p>

And a TOTAL waste of money. Waitlist itself has been bugging me because of the potential loss of deposit money. Why do you want to throw your money?

Heron: you're about to embark on a four year college and you need to make decisions in a timely manner -- even if not every fact is certain and there will always be questions about "the other school". Make an informed decision and live with the (most likely enjoyable) consequences. This barring of another's opportunity to take your other spot is wrong.

Maybe it's just the schools where my son is applying , but they've all said we have until May 1st to get the deposit money back. They emphasize that he'll get first choice in dorms, etc. One school is a definate "in" the program and the other is "in" but on a waiting list for that program.

Don't do that! It's unfair to the waitlisted people (of which there are many at every school this year)
