ok stupid question. if u pay the deposit, are u bound to attend, ie pay tuition for first semester?

or if u choose not to attend later on before september, do u just lose the deposit money?

Skillmonkeys, only pay your deposit if you know you are going to attend. This year, many good candidates were turned down by Michigan. Your sending in a deposit check and not showing up in the fall could hurt a wait listed student's chances.

alexander, i agree

however, i had made up my mind on umich before i visited tufts for my final time...and now i am split 50 50. i most likley am going to michigan, but was wondering if in the small chance i do not end up there, do i solely lose the $200 deposit?

Yes, you only lose the $200.

Don't do that... either choose Tufts or UM. That's taking a spot of a waitlisted student at either school, and I know there are tons of waitlisted students that are waiting to hear in hopes that a spot will open up.

trust me, if i could i definitely wouldn't have done that. i know first hand what it feels like to be waitlisted, and im not an ass. its just that i was sure i wanted to attend but unfortunately reconsidered at the last minute...plus i haven't definitely decided against michigan either

It's not hard. Both are fantastic schools, just pick one. Everyone else does that, everyone else follows the rules. Visit a school and decide, tons of students are in your scenario, look on this message board for example. There are kids who ask "Where should I go!" nearly every other post. You have a week, make up your mind. But don't take someone's spot, that's cruel. There are about a thousand kids waiting to see if maybe your spot opens up.

a2, i get the point bro, thats not the issue.

its not like i was still deciding then paid the deposit, rather, i had already made up my mind but unfortunately reconsidered at the last minute after having paid already

If you decide to go to Tufts, you will forfeit the deposit. As a courtesy, I would recommend that you call U-M as soon as you've made your final decision and tell them that you will not attend. Don't just be a "no show." That causes a lot of problems and really does hurt the chances of students on the wait list. If you let them know on/around May 1, there is still time for U-M to offer your spot to someone else.

If you get the point, don't do it. It's rude, it causes trouble, and hurts other applicants. And it will hurt your school's reputation with the university.
