I got accepted into CSUN and CSUF but I’m currently not passing any classes of my second semester because of my depression and anxiety. The past years I was able to handle both academics and mental illnesses, trying my best to balance both… It’s 2 months until graduation. My illness has become more severe that now I’m at my breaking point. I’ve been absent from school, almost a month, and my parent was angry of me but then I told them what’s going and they said I should meet to a psychiatrist. I’m really relief to have a support. But I don’t know if I should care anymore. I feel so hopeless; disappointed of my own self and numbed. I think I’m just not ready for college for now and should just attend CC then transfer. I’m far fetched from getting my highschool diploma, but is there a way I can get it in community college?
I’m sorry if my English has any mistakes.
I am so sorry you are having a rough time. I know this will sound impossible, but this will pass. But first you need to focus on your mental health. Get the name of a therapist and a psychiatrist. Meds plus talk therapy will help you feel better and then you can focus on school.
Thank you very much. I will do that.
@jackinthecar Talking with your parent was a great (and difficult) first step. Getting the medical help you need is key.
You may end up starting at a community college after HS graduation, but it wouldn’t hurt to contact the school you’d planned to attend and ask for a deferral. That would give you a year to work on other aspects of your life, and you are not committed to attending if things aren’t in place for you by then.
I’m sorry you’re going through that. I had a situation sort of like yours. I have depression and it was the worst during the 1st semester of junior year. That semester, I got 2 Ds and 2 Cs. What worked for me was going to a therapist and starting medication. The school counselor helped because I liked that someone else at my school knew what I was going through. What also helped was starting fresh the second semester of junior year. It sounds like you might not graduate because of failing classes this semester? If that happens, then maybe you could take summer school so you could get the credits to graduate. Summer school would be a fresh start for you because the grades from this semester would be erased. I definitely recommend talking to your school counselor to find ways for you to pass your classes or take summer school. I remember at my school hearing about my mom’s coworker’s son who was on the verge of not graduating, and his teachers helped him so he graduated.
Good luck.
My son has a good friend in a very similar situation. He was able to withdraw from non-required courses and finish the required ones on-line. He will officially graduate with his class next month and get’s to participate in the grad/sr class activities as he is able.I encourage you to get the help you need now - then worry about the next step. Most public high schools have seen this before and have several options for you. I encourage you to contact the school ASAP and see what they say.
In this kids case, he was admitted to several CSUs and a couple of OOS schools, I helped him a navigate maintaining the acceptances despite the schedule change. None of the needed medical records but, just reflected the schedule changes and noted that they were due to a medical situation.
As @nerdmom88 notes, a deferral is worth investigating. Most CSUs will allow for a semester or year long deferral for a medical issue. This maintains your incoming freshman status, and won’t require you to apply again. You need to submit the ‘Intent to Register’ (SIR) and pay the deposit at your desired school by May 1. The deferral process and deadline is campus dependent. Some schools may want a note from you doctor, other will take you at your word. I found a couple of schools that would take only a year, while others give a semester option. I will be helping my son’s friend in submitting the forms to defer at an OOS WUE school this week. This will maintain his WUE ‘scholarship’ and he won’t have to reapply.
One word of caution - if you attend even one class at a CC, you are a transfer student - meaning, at most campuses, you need 60+ units before they will look at your ap. In this kids case, he will be taking a gap year and working while he deals with his medical issue.
Good luck - and feel free to PM me with any questions about our experience.
