There’s only five or so weeks left in the semester at my school but I just can’t imagine living here anymore. My depression has skyrocketed in the past few months and every day is a struggle just to get through. I go to SUNY Binghamton and I live on campus and I just can’t imagine being here any more, and I’m transferring to a commuter school in the spring. My mom suggested talking to a counselor about my problem and seeing if there was any way to finish the semester from home. I’d have to come back for a few days at the end for finals, but is there any way that accommodations can be made considering my situation? Is there a way that this can be done? Is this completely unheard of?
It sounds like your living situation on campus – and not your academics and classes – are the source of your misery. have your requested different housing? Have you checked into moving in with other students in a dorm off campus, or renting a room in a house off campus? I’ve never heard of being able to finish remotely. I doubt all of your classes are available online, and it is probably too late in the semester to switch them to an online version even if they were. I recommend doing what your mom said by talking to a counselor, and also talking to an RA, and taking action to get your living situation changed for the better – without necessarily going home to do that. Explore all options.
Your situation is quite interesting but I don’t think it’s unheard of. What I could say is that find a strength in yourself which can support you finishing the semester. It’d be hard I know, but you’ve managed to stay there in the earlier days of the semester why quit now?
You can go talk with someone in academic advising or in a counseling center to arrange to take in-completes in your classes and/or see if some of your classes can be finished off at a distance by talking to instructors. If you don’t feel you can finish the semester just take in-completes. Don’t worry too much about that. It is more important that you take care of yourself and get your depression treated-and be in an environment that is supportive. You should go talk with someone as soon as possible so that you don’t get more discouraged or depressed.
