depth in an ec

just out of curiousity, how many hours of involvment in a week in an activity demonstrates dedication? is 10 not enough? is 20 too many?

i think 10 is just fine.

My activities (hours/weeks) in order of depth and importance. I think around 9-10 is a good amount, but it's also the number of years you've done it.

9/52, 4 years
3/25, 4 years
10/52, 13 years
3/36, 4 years
11/10 (a sport), 4 years
10/10, 4 years
2/52, 3 years

keep in mind I'm homeschooled and have a lot more free time :P

approximately 105 hours a week that I'm awake, subtract 13 for classes = 92, In the toughest part of my year, swim season, I do 32 hours of ECs, that leaves 60 hours that somehow magically disappear in homework, eating and attrition. I wish I could make better use of them :(

lolcats, can i be one to say that your EC list and dedication is ridiculously good? however, my best ec, i spend approx 16 hours/48weeks/year for 4 years. i think stanford likes the hours, but really wants to know what you actually got out of it. for my big EC, i wrote my personal statement about what it has taught me and how it plays an integral role in my life. i think it's all about significance and how you can relay it to the admissions people.

^ exactly, it's not necessarily the time you spend in it, it's what impact it has on you, and what your participation in it SHOWS about you. Like for me, I think the fact I'm on the swim team is only important because it shows I'm also a physical guy (my major ECs involve the computer), since I'm definitely not planning on swimming for Stanford :P

It just so happens that the best ECs that fill the above criteria take quite a bit of time. It's hard to do than in a 1 hr/week EC :)

Wow mine is like totally different....

25-45 during school & about 2 hrs during the summer (yearbook... I'm there more than at home(
5/52
2/36
3/36
4/40
2/36

oh and 15/52

Uh oh. Is it bad that most of my Ecs are only 2-4 hours a week (except for track and field which is more like 8)? I mean, I'm dedicated and stuff, but each individual thing I do I don't see how I could spend more than a few hours a week on. Ugh, I hope Stanford doesn't think I'm lazy even though my total hours per week for everything added up is like 21 which is like 3 hours a day.

What do y'all think?

That's actually a good amount. Mine is just more because of my commitment to yearbook and a lot of my other ec's overlap... so it's more manageable then it seems. lolcats4 is homeschooled.... so they actually need it probably.

Yeah so cliffnotes version... 21 is way more than most people I know.

Yeah I just checked with the valedictorian at my school who does a ton... but he said it was around 25... so you're fine.

Thanks guys! That makes me feel better.
I was just a little freaked because some of you have like 15 hours dedicated to a single activity while mine is a bit more spread out. But I guess it's ok.
