Just a thread for the desis...
i wonder what the acceptance rate will be for us.. higher or lower than the CC rate? your guess?

bump !

desi??? what's that

i'm applying rd...even though it's really hard...esp if you're indian...aaahhh...hate being indian for the first time in my life...

naaahh..j/k!

lol no it sucks when it comes to elite college acceptance or med school - then it REALLY sucks.. but you gotta have your desi pride

desi is indian.. if you didnt pick that up

thank ya :)

no problem... lol

omg there have been a billion desi threads lately. im so tired of being excluded!

really? desi threads on the stanford site? i havent seen any...

haha you can join in, we dont discriminate! lol. im prolly more american than i am desi anyway

What's the derivation of "desi?"

-Ender

lol i dont know.

Nevermind.

It means "local" in Hindi I guess. Go figure...

-Ender

really? i speak hindi, and I didnt know that

usually people just say local. (like, indian people call mediocre things "local")

I'm pretty sure...at least that's what forty-five seconds of Google told me...

-Ender

desi comes from 'des' or 'desh' which means 'country' in hindi

oh i knew that

yay indians. seriously though its so competitive for us, but i think just due to the sheer number of desi applicants our rates will be higher. god I hope so. no, i'm trying the whole pessimism thing... but ick i leave for India on the 15th i hope i know before then. you know how irratic internet is in India. :(

The name Desi, is derived from the word Des meaning a specific Space or Homeland, which for us is the Land of the Five Rivers,

i googled it too

lolol i didn't know about the derivation of desi
I did know that des/desh = country, however

the connotations of desi are interesting indeed. to me, it feels sorta like a club :-) with anyone welcome to join

Ind-Americans call themselves ABCDs, which stands for "American Born Confused Desi"; there are jokes around that extend it all the way to Z, like, "American Born Confused Desi, Emigrated From Gujarat, Housed In Jersey, Keeping Lotsa Motels, Named Omkarnath Patel, Quickly Reached Success Through Underhanded Vicious Ways, Xenophobic Yet Zestful."

I love the A-Z one!! Being desi si totally like a club, only its super exclusive. unless you're born desi you can't do anything to be allowed to join. yeah you can ilsten to bollywood music, and love SRK but that doesn't make you Indian. I don't know what i'd do if i wasn't indian though. its a huge part of who i am, and i have white friends who come to diwali shows and love hindi music who tell me, "Vaish, I wish I was Indian" it must be hard not to have a significant culture to fall back on. here in MN ppl are from Sweden and Norway, but thhey don't have any real ties there. Yay i'm going to India in two weeks!!

While I don't like Kareena Kapoor these lyrics are quite true
"Ek baar to India aake dekh na Kisi Indian se dil lagaake dekh na"
-Jeena sire merre liye
