Design/Media Arts - Can I Get In?

Hi guys n gals.

I'm currently a 19 year old male about to start my second year at a local community college in San Diego and I am looking to transfer to UCLA next fall and hopefully major in Design/Media Arts. I currently have taken about half of the 60 required credits required to transfer (most of them have been my General Education classes and now I need to take pre-requisites for the major) with a GPA of 3.9

I have heard that they weigh the portfolio much heavier then they do your GPA when determining admittance. I am more of a 3d artist then your typical 2d or drawing artist (however I am developing in that category). I have professional experience in the field, I have gotten internships at Sony Online Entertainment making video games over the past two years (this is what I want to do for a career). Would having this experience give me a little bit of an upper hand when applying?

Do you think I would get admitted into the Design/Media Arts major? Thank you!

portfolio definitely outweighs anything else. 3d art is fine, i have several desma friends who are big on that. the program is fairly computer heavy so if anything it might be an advantage (this is purely speculation on my part based on what i know of the program and the people in it).

it's really hard to chance for desma since it relies so much on the portfolio work and the application pool. best advice is get your classes done and make your portfolio awesome and as diverse as possible.

I thought it might help if I post a couple images of what I would consider using in my portfolio.

Honestly, no idea, but that is pretty impressive. Good luck.

Thanks.

Quick question, if I wanted to could I apply for the Media Design major and Architectural Studies major?

no, I don't think you can apply for two majors at once. I'm going to be a second year at UCLA starting fall quarter, and I just switched my major into DESMA. From what I hear, they look for any kind of art, but they like to see a variety (ie, different mediums, different types) and creativity. Like allie said, the most weight is put on your portfolio.

As for me, DESMA was something I wanted to do, but I never thought that I'd get in. I never took art classes before, and never really done anything of the sort. The work I have are amateur at most. My portfolio consist purely of photography of different kinds (both black/white and digital, gelatin prints, stretch, litho, pinhole, photogram). Most of them came from a beginning photo class I took in high school. So yeah, I think you'll be able to get in, seeing that you have experience from that area. Make sure you have a good personal statement too, I think that would help.
