Hello! I need seem help deciding on which classes to take! My intended major is English and I was recommended by my school to take an "Exploring Literature" class (ENG 110) but the class is full! And it is only offered to freshmen during the fall. Should I take ENG 120 titled "Why read?" instead? Any help and advice you can giveme will be greatly appreciated!

Can you be waitlisted for ENG 110?

Email the professor that is listed explaining why you want to take that class. You can either be placed on the waiting list and begin taking the course if someone drops it or they will give you a permission number allowing you to enter the class. I did this one year for a lit class and the professor ended up sending me the permission number and allowed me to enroll even though the class was closed!

It is usually up to the admins in the department office whether they open the class. The professor may or may not have any pull to add someone.

When a class is listed as closed, it might mean it’s “CLOSED” really or just “quote unquote closed”. In the classes I teach, they are often limited at 6 students, but then everyone past that has to go to the department office and get permission to take the course.

In rarer circumstances, the classroom assigned is only so big per fire codes, so it is really closed.

Note for future reference: befriend the person in the office who takes care of class registrations, it will serve you well. In some cases, your advisor can add you, but in other cases, you do need the professor’s permission AND the admin’s time.

And yeah, you should email your advisor ASAP if you have not. They might be able to help you more than we can.

I would definitely sign up on the wait list. Sometimes students decide to change their schedule and end up dropping a course, and then a seat is open for someone else to take. Usually the Registrar will email you if a seat becomes available.

I would also try asking your academic adviser. When I was scheduling classes, I wanted to get into this biology class, but the seats were full. I talked to my adviser, and she was able to get me into the class. Sometimes they have more seats than what they list on the Registrar.

I would definitely try one of the two suggestions I gave you, but you can always sign up on the wait list and email your adviser as well. If he/she tells you that the class is unavailable, then you’re pretty much out of luck.

Hopefully it works out for you.

@mibsprincess Unfortunately, when the class is listed on my portal it just says that the section is full but I don’t see a waitlist option

“Closed” sometimes means that they are reserving seats for incoming first years, and those seats can be released at orientation.

UPDATE: So I emailed the professor just like @stacks13 suggested and he was kind enough to talk to the registrar’s office. He added me to his class! Thanks for all of your suggestions!

Yay for you, nazarely!

You have just successfully completed your first class in College 101-- taking the initiative and self-advocating! You’ve really learned a valuable life lesson. So happy for you.
