I know this has been mentioned before, but I can’t find the answer. We are trying to find some sort of shelving or storage space to put above D’s desk in RSN. Can’t seem to find anything, can anyone lead me in the right direction. The desk is 48" wide, we could also add the little night stand to it to make it wider I suppose…

I’m not positive of this, but I think the 48" already includes the little night stand (if you mean the locking drawer unit).

Oh, you are right. “◦Desk (48” x 24”), with locking unit” So how big is the desk itself then?

I believe that it is 32 inches wide.

RCS desk is 42 x 24 (desks in RCW/RCE, LSW/LSE are 48 x 24) but in fairness the dresser in RCS is 36 x 24 whereas it is 30 x 24 in the “older” suite style dorms…so if you are planning to put these 2 items side by side it is the same.

I got the above measurements from the housing website under room details.

I don’t know if this is available in different finishes

Thanks that looks good…might be a little big to store, but will put it into my walmart cart for sure. :-)

look for folding bookshelf at target container store or bb&b.

I’m thinking about getting this one from the Container Store.
[The Container Store > White Folding Hutch](http://www.containerstore.com/shop/dorm/storage/shelves?productId=10025274&N=78112)

Measurements I took back at BB would make that white hutch a little too wide for the desk in Ridgecrest South, as the hutch is 28" wide and the desk is just under 26" wide. I suppose you could put the nightstand next to the desk but not sure how stable that would be. Or you could put it on the dresser.

Dresser 35 3/4" x 24 1/4" x 30"
Desk 25 3/4" x 24 1/4" x 30"
Nightstand 17" x 24 1/4" x 30"

Oh, you’re right. Thanks for those measurements!

Oh goodness, there is no container store in Alabama… really??? I love that hutch!

We pushed the desk, end cabinet, and drawer together to make one long work surface and then used two folding metal book cases from Walmart and two wire shelves to make a hutch that sat on the work surface. Worked great and it all compacts down to a vey small package for all the shelf space it provides. Here is a link to the folding book cases: [Walmart.com: Metal Folding 4 Shelf Bookcase, Multiple Finishes: Furniture](http://www.walmart.com/ip/4-Tier-Folding-Metal-Bookshelf/16004932)

I don’t understand why at least minimal bookshelf space isn’t provided in the newer dorms. Most students have at least one shelf of textbooks and class materials. When I lived in Martha Parham, back during the Paleolithic Era, there were bookshelves attached to the walls above our desks.

We purchased a freestanding bookshelf for my daughter’s room in Lakeside West and were actually able to find floorspace for both the freestanding bookshelf and a portable keyboard – even without putting any of the furniture under the bed. Just another option to consider.

idk either, but it isn’t.

Honestly, I’ve never noticed the lack of bookshelves in the newer dorms. For the few books I have, they are usually in my backpack, the top of my desk or dresser, or in a box. FWIW, MikeW’s suggestion of using liquor boxes for move-in would also be useful idea for storing books.

It’s interesting to see how different students decide to outfit/decorate their dorm rooms. Some will go all out and completely redecorate and some will keep the decorations to the minimum. The best bet seems to be to decorate ones room in a way that works for their personal style. Remember too that most types of furniture can be purchased year round and even the dorm-specific stuff is available into October, often at 50-75% off.
