Okay so as I see it dorms come with 2 ethernet ports, one for each roommate. Anyway, I plan on bringing my desktop and laptop with me and I want to be able to be online on each simultaneously. Would this be possible with a router, and wiring ethernet cords to my desktop and laptop from the router? Beyond that would I even be able to set up a small wireless network with a wireless router and adapters? Or is it just not possible at most college campuses and I'll be forced to use one online at a time?

I would think you could use a small Ethernet switch like this would be sufficient.

A router would work. The thing I am not sure about is whether the college itself has restrictions or certain details dealing with such scenarios.

If your college has wifi, which I think most do, you could wire your desktop and go wireless with your laptop.
