So what should I invest in? I play games when I'm bored but it's college so I dunno if I will have the time to play games (Engineering major here). And what's the ratio of people bringing desktops to laptops would you say?

i think theres another thread about this somewhere check that

You will have time to play games first year. You usually won't have to bring your laptop to class.

If you go home often, then get a laptop. Otherwise, a desktop ironically is fine.

Laptop

Able to go to lounge, friend's room, wherever to do work (especially if you're an engineer).

I've yet to meet anyone with a desktop. Laptops are just too convenient.

laptop portability trumps everything.

laptop, unless you're a hardore PC gamer that needs the graphics power that only desktops can provide...

I heard from a couple people that we can bring both.. like desktop when working in dorms and laptop if you need the quietness to work at the library or study lounge... do you guys think thats a good plan?

if you want both, bring both. some people have both. its not like they're gonna kick you out of housing for having 2 computers :p

but i personally dont see why you cant just use a laptop for your main computer in your dorm too. i'd think it would be a hassle to transfer files over, etc whenever you want to use your laptop, vs just unplugging and go if your laptop is your main computer.

well I use the splitter thing for my computer and laptop so I can share the monitor, keyboard and mouse... I like the bigger screens on desktop... and it is faster for gaming...

Ya Bring 2.

You generally won't be using a laptop while studying. Either way, you'll learn to not use one to maximize productivity.

Having both does require extra security measure.

I love my desktop screen, and it's not even big (19 inches), so I would always love to work at my desktop. I just don't like having my Laptop to be my main computer because of the lack of space monitor size, and I like having a computer always on so I can check stuff quickly! I already have 700ish gigs of HD and I feel that's not enough :(

I have a laptop too for recording lectures, taking notes, and viewing PDF files that contain answers for whatever I am doing.

i saw a girl take her whole desktop to the lounge to study last week. granted it was just an iMac but I was still like what the heck is going on! she had the keyboard, mouse, and desk lamp lol

There are gaming laptops that Dell sells. And if you need anymore graphics than what laptops have, you need to reconsider yourself, and go out to meet chicks.

I still don't think anyone ever needs to bring both a desktop and a laptop..but maybe it's because I'm OOS?

seems a bit excessive. a laptop will do

oh gao you always have such good advice.

When I think of the name Gao, I think of a very nerdy chinese boy with glasses. Is it true for Gao's case?

you win the award for worst question asked on CC. congratulations!

oh and thanks subbi, i love you too.

kevin> The bit about graphics isn't really about need. Some people just prefer to have crystal sharp graphics which can only be attained by a desktop. You don't have to necessarily be a hardcore gamer that gets absorbed in the world of games to want good graphics. My roommate has a decked out Desktop and he doesn't really play any games. It's just that if he ever wants to, he can, and it will look beautiful.
