Desktop with 19' screen in dorm

I'm planning on taking a full sized destop with a 19' screen to NYU. Will this fit in the dorm room on my desk or do I need to get a laptop?

thats kinda big. it'll prob. fit, but its still excessive. if you could get a laptop, get one.

Oh no....I'm bringing a 23' screen. But it's being hooked up to my laptop.

That's cool...but the thing is that if I don't take my desktop then i'll get a laptob with a 17' screen, so I tought I might as well take a much more powerful desktop that won't overheat as easily.

By the way, are any of you getting tv tuner's for your comp? I thought this would be neat since you wouldn't have to buy a seperate tv but instead simply watch live tv on your pc.

I ask that you consider your roommates when you decide what size screen to bring. :D I have trouble sleeping when there are bright lights or loud noises, and when people have their huge, bright LCD screens running and their loud, whirring computer fans going and I'm trying to sleep in my bed five feet away, it's really obnoxious. Just a thought. :)

true dat...

I turn mine off at night. Don't worry, I wouldn't be able to sleep either!

FBI_34 - I have a TV Tuner for my laptop but my roommate and I are still getting a TV. Sometimes I have problems with the TV Tuner, sometimes it just doesn't want to cooperate, and it's a TON of cords anyway. Another thing ya gotta take into consideration is if you're going to be doing any of your homework while you watch TV. If so, you might not wanna be watching on your computer cuz it could interfere.

Definitely a noteworthy alternative, but just take everything into consideration =)

I got a tv tuner...i think its pretty cool, but I think I'll probs still get a tv...or an extra screen.

I find the fact that you're willing to bring a desktop puzzling. You should take a really good laptop (even a 17inch desktop replacement one) and use the space you save on other things. I find laptops soooo much more convienient and space-saving than desktops. :)

Or get a 15inch laptop and then hook up a 19inch screen to it. There are sooo many alternatives to bringing a bulky desktop. Also keep in mind that you're going to have to put the desktop in storage every time you move out which is expensive and is a pain in the butt. :)

Something I just remembered - the desks in the dorms can be slightly different sizes. Unless they replaced the desks in Weinstein since I was there, my roommate and I both had desktops with older, big monitors, and they BARELY fit - there was absolutely no room to do homework or anything else on the desk. I especially remember that between the desktop and the bottom of the first bookshelf, there wasn't enough room to accomodate the monitors' heights, so we both had our monitors at odd angles on the desks. For that reason, I strongly recommend laptops.

Thanks for all the great advice. I'm looking at some laptops now...do any of you have any reccomendations on a good 17' screen one?

I still am considering taking a desktop, but shades_children and futurenyustudent kind of made it obvious that this would be illogical, haha. But the other thing is I have a flat LCD monitor, so space on the desk may not be as big of a problem as it was with the older monitors.

Btw scrapnel...do you have a reccomendation of a specific type/brand on tv tuner to get? I heard some of them are not that good and the picture qualitiy is poor.

Well mine is actually one that came with my laptop, but Amazon shoppers seem to like this one:

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007QOKAI/ref=pd_cp_e_title/103-3698822-4848647?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=172282%5B/url%5D">http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007QOKAI/ref=pd_cp_e_title/103-3698822-4848647?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=172282</a></p>

i am planning to get the 13.3 in macbook, and hook it up to a 19inch LCD monitor when i am back at the dorm. i was just concerned that would this be considered too extravagant that people might actually steal the monitor when i am away or something? i know that this is kind of worrying too much, but i thought this would be pretty possible.

Computer theft is uncommon, but not unheard of. Valuables can get stolen - iPods, credit cards, even cash. I haven't heard of anyone's room getting broken into, but it's very easy to duplicate keys and stuff, so don't go leaving your keys wherever. Most of the time, though, people leave their rooms unlocked and someone looks in, takes something that strikes their fancy, and skedaddles. If you really like something, you can a) keep it on your person, b) keep it in your sight, or c) tie it down.
