Desperate and maybe Doomed? PLZ give me some feedback

Please CC, I really need your help.
I am a first generation college student and have practically no one with experience to turn to for help.
I am in top 20 LAC, doing relatively okay except for having failed a mechanics physics class during my first semester at college. I would please like to know how negatively I should expect this to affect my admission into top to decent March programs in the near future as this is usually a required class. I know that I could retake the class and I am planning to take a semester abroad for a design program that my college offers and find arch-related internships. Assuming I improve my gpa before I graduate is this still enough to make me look good? What are my alternatives. I am early in my college career and have considered quitting and reapplying and redoing college basically because I really hate having this failing grade on my record for life. Is the failed class worth the sacrifice or would I be fine if I continued?
Thank you very much for any feedback.

If that’s the only black mark on your record, I think you’ll be fine. Many students have trouble freshman year.
