Desperate need of help

I totally screwed up in HS. Went to private school all my life, then entered public CA hs. Total Shock. Way to easy, didn't think I needed to try. I am really smart. (trying not to brag, but people regard me as highly intellectual) frustrated teachers by not trying. They urged me to apply myself but i didn't give a rats ass. After 1st semester of JR year, I decided to apply myself. I became a huge victim of bullying and completely shut down. The last place I wanted to be was school. I debated homeschooling, but it wasn't for me. Stuck it out. Summer I took two classes..Gov and Econ. I did as amazing as my teachers told me I could. I ended up having the highest grades in each class. I wish I would have had the same focus for my entire hs career, but oh well. This experience has taught me a lot. Because of it I have matured greatly.

In my ec's every program I have worked with, I made a huge positive impact. I turned the programs back to their former glory. Focused on my ECs when I should have focused more on school. The work that I did in my EC's shows what kind of person I am, and how I can effect the world. I have to emphasize this on my essays.

I don't even know what schools will accept me. I wanted to go to CMC, but that is an incredible reach. My econ teacher (CMC) grad is good friends with Adam Miller the associate Dean of Admission. I have a meeting with him on Tues. Doubt I will get in.

Can you guys give me a few options on where to look at. I like small academic schools with a good reputation. Doesn't have to be the same caliber as CMC, but close will do.

Do you guys have any advice.

Sorry if this was crazy long. Thanks for your responses.

Did I miss what you want to major in?

What state are you in?

Do you know how much your parents will pay? Your budget from your parents will largely determine where you should apply.

Yea…Is cost an issue? Do you prefer West Coast schools or East Coast schools?

I want to major in biomedical science. I eventually want to go to grad school to study regenerative medicine/genetics.

I’m in California.

My parents are currently paying around 30k for my sister, so I’d imagine around the same, with some leeway considering the school.

I love the feeling of East Coast schools (in fact, I’m a bit obsessed), but my mom isn’t sold on them, or their prices. If i do stay west coast, I would stay in California.

I think you should look at Mount Holyoke and Bates. If Colby is SAT-optional, try that too. Schools of that type might be more likely to take a chance on you, especially if you can pull all As first semester senior year. And you really need to do better in math, especially if you want to go into a STEM field! Get a tutor for Stats right away, if necessary.

I’m not horrible in math. I should have at least gotten b+ I’d I tried…but not trying in math gives you a horrible shot at doing well in the class. Last year, first semester, I was so close to that A, but I let it slip away. Then in Second semester, the girl who bullied me was in that class, so I was often distracted.

Fine, but you got Cs in Algebra and Geometry, too. Not a good record.

That’s what I was talking about in the above posts. The fact that I should have obtained b+ but I decided not to try. My geometry teacher was horrible cuz it was his first year teaching. Hardly anyone got a b let alone an a. Those grades are not a reflection of my abilities in math. They simply reflect laziness. I was immature and couldn’t comprehend the full consequences of not doing well in school. Now that I am applying to colleges I realize that my reckless behavior put me into an unfavorable position. It’s a valuable lesson I have learned. Now that I am focused on doing well, I want find a school that will be able to understand my situation. I did not post on this website to be discouraged and have others highlight my mistakes. I am well aware of my mistakes and don’t need them pointed out. I came on here because of my lack of self confidence in finding a school. I wanted to learn about some options that I have.

Sounds like you may do better in a private college setting than a public one based on your HS experiences. Have you tried taking the ACT? You might do better with the ACT than the SAT. I suggest you to take a practice test on the ACT and see how you do compared to the SAT. If you can pull-up your scores a bit, you may have a chance of getting some type of merit-aids from some of the private colleges here in California, such as Chapman, USD, LMU, Pepperdine, and other LAC’s. The other options for cost purposes would be the public route such as UC’s or CSU’s.

Here’s a link you can look up for biological/biomedical degree programs. Good luck!

I tend to favor private schools. The public schools in CA are great, but I don’t want to have hundreds of people in the class with me. Definitely smaller classes with personal relationships with teachers. I’m not to worried about cost…the UCs and CSUs are raising the tuitions, and I don’t see that stoping in the future.

Thanks for finding that link for me.

*My parents are currently paying around 30k for my sister, so I’d imagine around the same, with some leeway considering the school. *

Just to be sure, ask your parents how much they will pay. It’s not always a guarantee that parents will or can pay twice as much. They may or may not be prepared to pay out $60k or more per year.

If your parents say that they will pay $55k+ per year for you, then there will be some options for you. If they say that they’ll pay $30k for you, you’ll have to more carefully select your options.

Your stats may not be high enough for the privates that give good aid. Usually students need higher stats for those schools. If you raise your scores enough, AND you qualify for aid, then you might get accepted to those schools.

well my EFC is 53k

I don’t need to go to a prestigious private. I’m going to start off at a lower tier school and work myself up.

well my EFC is 53k

Most lower tier schools do not meet need, so they can/will expect you to pay most/all of your costs.

Regardless of what your EFC is, be sure to ask your parents how much they’ll pay.

Look, there is no point in getting huffy. The fact is, you do not have a history of doing well in math classes. Math tends to be a cumulative thing, like building blocks. Your poor showing before this MAY indicate missing building blocks. You are interested in a quantitative field, and you are going to be taking AP Stats. An excellent grade in that class first semester would boost your chances of getting in to a school that would suit you. Therefore it would make sense to make arrangements to have a tutor from the get-go, to make sure you don’t get into trouble and perform up to your potential. If you can afford it, why not?

Trying a practice ACT to see how you do is a good idea. BTW, what was the breakdown on your SAT?

You should also take a look at some good midwestern LACs such as the College of Wooster and Earlham.

my sat breakdown was 610m 560cr 560w

my major problem is with timing, so with more practice, and familiarizing myself with the test, I think I will be able to do much better.
