<p>Oh I'm definitely not applying to just four schools! I already have a list of seven schools which I was planning on applying to for psychology before I had my recent epiphany. I'm still going to apply to many of those as well. Yes, I definitely agree four schools is waaaaay too few.</p>
<p>And for the Steinhardt/Tisch thing, I was inquiring as to whether or not I could apply for the B.M. Musical Theater major and the B.M classical music & opera major both within Steinhardt. Not sure if it's possible, but I read somewhere on this forum that it might be.</p>
<p>At Steinhardt, it looks like you CAN apply for both BM concentrations simultaneously (classical music/opera and MT). First you have to submit recorded materials and fill out their information sheet. Here's a link to their information sheet. You'll see that you can choose both Classical and MT.</p>
<p>Kaitrin - I think KatMT said it perfectly - you are only 17 - you have a lifetime ahead of you and you can change your mind!!! Its OK. I work with teens day in and day out and I try to help them see that the college major they pick for their applications in November does NOT need to be the college major (or even the college!) that they graduate with. Check out all the great suggestions you've been given. I am new here, too, and learning a ton - from what you wrote it sounds like you have talent, brains and courage - and know how to use all 3. <p>The two programs you are interested in at Steinhardt are both considered their "vocal performance" major and lead to the BM degree. My understanding is that approximately 24 people are admitted each year in total. Most choose to do the MT concentration which is slightly different than the Classical/ Opera concentration. Search their website for the requirements for each. Many of the classes (including the music concentration taken by all music majors in Steinhardt) are the same. The program (and audition) is headed by the same faculty. The voice teachers work with both students and the shows (both Classical /Opeara and music theatre) are open to all vocal performance students. Although the majority of applicants choose the MT concentration, they may choose to study some classical repetoire in private lessons, etc. I get the impression that there would be flexibility if you decided to declare one concentration and then changed it to the other.</p>
<p>Uskoolfish, I wonder if you know how selective the Steinhardt BM for voice is. 24 admitted out of how many? Is this the kind of info the school would release if I called?</p>
<p>When DD was looking at Steinhardt for BM VP she had an interview with the admissions director before deciding to audition. He was very forthcoming with the numbers in the meeting. Unfortunately I don't remember them but admit rate was less than 20%. And it was uneven across voice types. DD is mezzo so numbers were a little better than sopranos.</p>
<p>Another thing about OCU is the voice faculty for MT and VP is the same and VP and MT students work on both classic and MT repertoire. Both MT and VP students are required to audition for all musicals and operas and there is alot of cross casting.</p>
<p>Thanks for all the extra info. I'm completely aware of how selective admissions are. Back when I wanted to pursue opera, I was encouraged to look along the lines of New England Conservatory/Juilliard(although not for undergrad!). When I switched to psychology I visited a couple ivies and other elite schools. I know it's really tough to get into these places, but 24 people looks pretty good compared to some of the programs I've looked at in the past (which is ridiculous). I also come from a very big music family pretty well established in my area, and I'm fortunate to have some really excellent connections with people who can write me recommendation letters. And if I don't get in, I go to one of my schools that's not super MT based. I also have a well respected VP program that would give me a spot if I wanted. I've kinda just been keeping all my options open. I definitely want to do the MT thing, but if I can't get in there's tons of other avenues I know I can take.</p>

<p>If you read the Music Forum (which is NOT for Musical Theater), Singersmom's D was applying for Vocal Performance programs. She got into Steinhardt but chose to attend Rice.</p>
<p>Ahh, sooziet you are correct. I do not usually post on this forum for that reason. But one of that things that DD like about Steinhardt was the combination of the 2 programs. Until she settled into the pure VP track she was attracted to programs that allowed both. In the end, Rice offered a better package to suit her for VP and $$$. When she interviewed before auditions she was asking about VP with MT opportunities.</p>
