Desperately need advice on transferring to UCSB, UCD, UCSC, UCR from a cal state

I'm currently a 2nd semester freshman in san francisco state university and I literally feel stuck here. It's too close to home, 45 minutes away, and I feel like my school lacks any type of spirit. I come from a HS with a football team and I enjoyed being surrounded by students who have lots of school spirit. It just feels gloomy and I'm not happy here...
My literally parents forbid me to go to community college, so the option of considering a CCC is out of the question...:(

I really want to transfer to UCSB, UCSC, UCD, or even SDSU as a Junior. Is it possible if I work my a** off this semester and the next two semesters? Or should I just stay in my school and bare it? I also plan to go to graduate school/med school after my undergrad.
GPA: 3.6-3.8

I’m not quite sure yet.

You are literally the last in the line if you are trying to do university inter-transfer.

A member from a CSU with a 4.0 GPA got rejected from UCSB couple of days ago.

Hmm, okay:/
thanks anyways…

I highly recommend attending CC. Your parents are making a big deal out of nothing.

I was in your spot two years ago. SFSU sucks so much. Believe me, get out and into a cc while you still can. Can you explain to your parents how much state sucks? Bring up that going to any uc is so much better and maybe they’ll hear you out. My friends who are still there say getting upper division classes is almost impossible now because of budget cuts. Most of them are going to have to stay an extra year to graduate even. Leaving SFSU was one of the best decisions I ever made and I’m so excited to finally start at a uc in the fall. Good luck!

What exactly are your parents issues with CCCs anyways? Is it about saving face?

@jasonSkim They think i’ll be less motivated in a CCC than a regular 4 year…That’s why they made me pick sfsu…

@socali909 I’ll try again to convince them…it’s like the look down on CC’s, so it’s hard to make them consider. Is there anyway I can possible transfer from where I am now to a UC? I f**** hate this school…

Is it possible? Yes. But the possibility is next to unlikely–like winning the lotto

Does the same go for other universities, outside of CSU’s and UC’s?

I was in the same situation last year: freshman at a CSU, hated it, wanted to transfer to a CC then UC, but my parents were against me going to a CC.

If they’re willing, I would suggest you take your parents with you to meet with a transfer counselor at one of the UC’s you’re interested in. Or at least have them speak with one over the phone. Taking them to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth really showed my parents that A) I was determined to succeed, and B) that going to a CC really was in my best interest. Maybe it will work for you too.

Okay, I’ll try that. If nothing goes as planned, I’ll have to just apply as csu->uc transfer i guess.

UCs are required by the state to give highest transfer priority to CCC transfers and lowest to transfers applicants already at a four year college or university. I really do not know how hard it is to transfer from one CSU to another. You have a strong GPA but getting into SDSU is very difficult, probably harder than getting into most UCs, if you are applying from outside their service area.

If you can afford the tuition a private school is a good prospect since they are not required to give preference to CCC transfers and actually would probably prefer an applicant from a CSU over one with the same GPA from a CCC. However, unlike UCs and CSUs which are required to maintain spaces in their upper division courses for a large number of CCC transfers the private schools are likely to have fewer openings for transfers.

@Lemaitre1 Okay, thanks you! I’ll look into private schools as well. What are lower ranked UC’s that I would have a chance at besides UC merced?
