My DS is looking at several NC schools. One is High Point University, formerly High Point College, in High Point, NC. While the school has a great website and printed literature, I've not been able to learn much about the school, its quality, or culture. Your opinions are greatly valued. Appreciate your help!

I live in No. VA and visited High Point this spring. On the plus side: small, liberal arts, very pretty campus; small class size. On the negative side: struck me as a bit conservative atmosphere; and the men's dorm reeked of cigarette smoke smell, even though they only allow it on a few floors. The town of High Point is very small, but of course close to Greensboro, Winston Salem, etc. Also you might check to see if they offer the major your student is interested in.

WE had also been to visit U of Mary Washington, Lynchburg College, Christopher Newport. All of those places had excellent student fitness facilities; at High Point, it was tiny and each student had a membership at the local YMCA, but it was away from campus.

As usual, it all depends on what you're looking for...

NEVER HEARD OF IT, chances are if i never heard of it, not many have...i have thoroughly researched collegs..

Just in case you're interested...here's what I found after really scrounging around...

High Point has a new president, local Nido Qubein, internationally known motivational speaker and successful businessman on several major national boards, among other things. He was recruited by HPU and did not seek the position; he is an HPU grad. Within the first 29 days of his tenure, he raised approximately $20 million, promising to obtain another $10 million quickly...with a 3-year goal of $50 million. It seems that HPU was offering substantial unfunded scholarship money driving HPU into debt. This hampered HPU's ability to retain fulltime faculty and make necessary campus improvements. Qubein is determined to turn this around quickly and to improve the campus, its programs, and its standing. In April, work was begun on the Steele Recreational Center (with first-class facilities) due to open fall 2006. It seems the people of the local High Point community love the guy, and it has energized the campus.

To CathyB: Thanks for your frank assessment. It's difficult to thoroughly examine the "long list". Your input is appreciated.

To CollegeKid1988: Yes, HPU is under the radar, but my guess is that if the new president has anything to say about it, it won't remain there for long. Thanks.

High Point has a pretty famous grad in KY, KY basketball coach Tubby Smith.
