DESPRETLY in need of help b4 JAN 22!!

ok you guyz heres the deal...im taking the january sat and i need to break through the 1400.. ill do anything ANYTHING at all to get above that.. u c im still in grade 11 but i really dont want to have to take the new sat so im kind off rushing to take the old one b4 its 2 late to do so....i took it for the first time in nov. and did horrible 560m 590v...obviosly NO GOOD!! I have no clue where i went wrong, i mean i memorized the hard words and did a gazillion math probs but i got a whole lotta critical reading ones wrong even thought i thought i was right!! also i have problems with the time limits i always end up leaving like a whole lot at the end of each sections...ok SUGGESTIONS...ADVICE...WHAT SHOULD I READ, HOW SHOULD I READ IT,WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN I READ IT..and HOW CAN I IM{PROVE MY MATH SCORE by ALOT!!!! Just give me anything and everything that i can do in bout 30 days until jan 22!! THNX!!

Advice? This may be impossible, but I'd say just CALM DOWN. Don't go through the test too fast, take your time. In anticipation of the test, I'd say just get 10 Real SAT's and just become familiar with the types of questions. Find a strategy that works for you. For example, I tend to go real slow, especially in the critical reading (I actually read through the whole passage at about half the speed I normally read).

for math, just do every single problem you can find, and go over each one you get wrong like a billion times, then invent your own problems using the same format and different numbers, and you will get the concept down

search the forums for strategies on verbal and math.

just nuy 10 Real SATs and take all the tests. after you take all the tests, analyze all the questions you got wrong and try to see what you're weaknesses are and work on them. Memeorize all the vocab words on the tests that you dont know because you'll mostlikely see them again. Try to find out why you got the answers that you got wrong wrong.
My strategy on the tests are :
Verbal- spend up to 30 seconds on analogies, sc, and cr questions
spend about 5 minutes on each passage
use the rest of the time to go over the questions i am not sure about
Math- spend up to 1 minute on each question
after spending 30 seconds on a problem, move on if i cant solve the problem
spend the rest of the time going over the questions i am not sure about

ok thnx a lot you guys ! i got this book by arcor "Master the SAT" it has about 5 practice tests and like really good explanations i hope that helps... But anyways thnx a lot!!

lol well...not to be mean or anything but you have some spelling errors in ur post (despretly= desperately) as for me, before the first time i took it, i bought a book that said "most common words on sat" or watever, and that didnt help with anything at all. i think that memorizing words doesnt help at all, even if you KNOW the words, you have to understand the analogy. and as you can see that all of the questions on the sat are worth the same (for each section) that means that they wont give u any more credit for the easiest question (#1) or the hardest question (the last one). so i think what helped ME the most was timing, knowing how much to spend where. i suggest that go through the first 1/3 of the verbal test and follow ur first instinct, dont think too much on those cuase those are easy ones, spend a lil more time on the medium ones, and try to get as much of the hard ones as possible with the time remaining. the main thing here is get as much right as u can, doenst mean get EVERYHING right. and ur tryin to go from 11 something to 14something on the second try? im not sure if thats possible. the truth is, all of us , or most of us, who takes the SAT think its a piece of cake and will get 1400 for sure, but u make dumb mistakes, and the only way to avoid that is to time urself and be confident when u walk in the test. so umm yea dont freak out. ahah use the 10realsats and practice, even tho i got "tips" and "strategies" for the verbal section from an SAT tutor (for free), those tips didnt help as much as knowing when its time to move on. and plus when ur sittin there with the test, u dont have time to think of what tips and strategies u knew from before. so practice as much as u can, and if u said that u thought u did eveythin right, i think u should be able to get at least 100 point improve...not sure about a 1400 though. goodluck.

I think you're breathing now, which is a good sign :)
Anyway, use grammatix.com, raised my score from 1260 to 1400. Exactly. Phew.

thnx a lot on all of your advice!! well the first time i took the sat i was such a wreck- i was sooo nervous it was'nt even funny and although i thought i was prepared... i really wasnt!! i mean i thought i had nailed it but i realise now what my weak points are...and imna focus on those!! im not a 1100 type of person..I mean im sure that hopefully i can do much better i know what im capable of and well anyways ill do my best! thnx alot!!

Hehe, I'm in the same boat elodie, I'm taking it this january too.

You should probably go to sparknotes since they have a free practice SAT online. It's a diagnostic test so it gives info about your answers and how you can improve so it's pretty cool.

In fact, I think I'm gonna take that practice test later today...

For math the "triage" system works great. You do problems you know you can do without doubt first and then work on the rest.
For verbal; in reading i did the act passages b/c i took the act too and that helped my get through the sat ones quickly and with minimal mistakes(750)
But really just relax and take some practice tests and find your weaknesses i.e. time, and try to figure out why you run out of time. For me I always stayed on hard problems too long b/c i knew i could work them and left easier ones blank killing my math score(600).
