Destination Tulane Admitted Students Day

My son and myself are visiting in March for Destination Tulane. Is this something he should do without me? I can always find something to do while he is at the school. If anyone has been I would love to get some details on the day. Thanks.

A lot of parents are there too. Totally up to you and him.

Planning on going to Top Scholars with daughter. What about orientation? Should parents go to that as well or is that overkill? thanks

@X22011

Yes, I do think that is overkill. Part of the idea of orientation is also to ease students into the fact that they will be on their own at Tulane vis-a-vis their parents, at least in the physical sense. Might as well have you getting used to it as well, even if it is only for a night or two.

A lot of Orientation overlaps with what they did at TSW, but that is actually a good thing. It frees the student up to relax, focus on learning the campus better, focus on meeting people, maybe meet with a prof or two if that makes any sense and if the profs are around, etc. They can do that while others are registering for classes since they already did that. Of course they can tweak their schedule if they want to as well. But the point is they get used to navigating these things more on their own.

Thanks, that is what we thought, but we had noticed there is a schedule for parents for both programs so wanted to be sure we didn’t need to go to both. As much as we like visiting New Orleans going for Top Scholars, orientation and then soon after move in day would be a lot.

@X22011

There is a Parents Program during Orientation because most of the students at Orientation are not in the Honors Program and so were not invited to TSW. For these students and their parents, it will be the first opportunity to register for classes and be exposed to these talks, respectively.

Coming down for Destination Tulane in March. Help with hotels! How far would Metairie area be for Tulane? Also is that area connected with streetcars?

Metairie is not that far, but it is not in the streetcar line. Are you saying most hotels in the city are booked already?

Metairie is not really convenient, you won’t be ale to get a good feel for the city. Look in French Quarter, Central Business District, Warehouse District, Uptown. Look at the visiting Tulane link for hotels that offer a Tulane discount.

What are the dates fro Destination Tulane?

Still looking…thx for the responses. @dolphnlvr6 march 14th is the date for Destination Tulane

That’s a popular time in NOLA. That weekend is many of the St. Patty’s parades. I can see why hotels would be booked. French Market Inn in the Quarter has Deluxe rooms for $179/night if you have AAA. Its just been completely renovated, it’s a beautiful property in a great location.

We stayed in Metairie a couple of times when we were looking at Tulane. We had a rental car and it wasn’t that bad.

Staying close to school is ideal for Orientation. We like the Hampton Inn on St Charles (make sure you ask for the Tulane rate). It is on the streetcar line, but we usually rent a car. Hampton has free parking (also free breakfast and free wifi). I was just there in January and was pleasantly surprised that the rooms had been recently renovated. Hotel Indigo is just a little further down St Charles. Be aware that if you do rent a car that many streets around the school say that there is a two hour limit for parking (I’m not really sure how strictly this is enforced. I have my doubts). There is a parking lot on campus. If that is your plan then I would find out if maybe they wave the fee for Orientation parents.
My son is currently a junior and I had a great time at Orientation. I even finally got to meet some of my CC friends in person (shout out to Oliver17 and Vitrac!). There are informative meetings for the parents and there was a wine and cheese get together at the alumni house the evening that the kids slept over in the dorms. Tulane even provided a bus afterwards to area hotels.

Also SO MANY streets are under construction right now that driving and parking is a nightmare. We took our car down for Mardi Gras and parked it at our friends house for the 2 weeks we were there. It’s easier to get around without a car really.
