What's the best way to get an idea for the normal student experience? Is it possible to arrange an overnight visit?

Absolutely. My D went for Honors Weekend and there is an overnight associated with that. Of course it is not possible to get the full feel for it in 2 days and 1 night, especially since it is a program with set events (but also free time), but it at least gives you some idea for sure.

Fallen- is there a special weekend associated with the DHS also? I see they sent my DD dates of the Honors Weekend so we are trying to plan. Were there events for the parents at the Honors weekend also or strictly for the kids? We were waiting on Merit before visiting so now we are pushing forward with plans to make a visit. Yeah!

Spring - Excellent! There is no special weekend for the DHS. Just to elaborate, there will be either 75 or 100 winners (not sure which they are doing this year) and they won’t be announced until mid to late March, as I recall the timing with my D last year. Of those winners, some subset will choose Tulane. It was 26 out of 75 last year, something like 40 out of 100 the year before (is that right jym?). They then have a really nice breakfast on the Sunday morning of move-in weekend at the start of the semester for the winners that matriculated.

For Honors Weekend, there are events for the parents as well as the kids, but mostly you attend various talks and do a tour if you want, and the kids split off later in the day and do their own things, including activities that night. Then they stay with a student in the dorm that night, do advising sessions and other things like attending classes the next morning, then you join back up. I thought it was quite worthwhile, even though I am an alum. It is a different perspective of course as a parent. If she decides on Tulane there are also orientation sessions during the summer, but that is for all students. The Honors Weekend is special since it is just for kids in the HP, and they get a head start on knowing each other. Many of them will end up in Butler (honors dorm) no doubt, and they might meet someone they want to room with.

Thanks fallen, I knew you would be able to help. I am sure we will be heading down on one of those 2 honors weekends. With as cold as it is now in Chicago, I cant wait!

I have a queston about the Destination Tulane weekend. My daughter has visited Tulane two separate times and last time (mid-November) actually sat in on some classes. While she really wants to attend one of the Destination Tulane events, there are some possible road blocks. 1) I will have just been in town for my high school reunion and it will cost us about $700.00 just to fly us back down to New Orleans. 2) Her high school offers exam exemption to the seniors with a certain GPA IF and only if they don’t miss classes the second semester of their senior year. Because we are in North Carolina, it is almost impossible to get down to New Orleans unless she misses a day of school (neither one of the two Saturdays that are offered will work for us). So, my question is…if she has already visited and toured Tulane two times, is it worth it to spend the money (and risk losing her exam exemption) to come for one of the Destination events? We are also very familiar with New Orleans as I was born and raised there. Is there anything different that will be taking place? It looks like the schedule of events is very similar to the events that took place at the Campus Preview days. The only new event looks to be a visit to a dorm room.

I really want to do this for her if it will indeed be beneficial, but if it is really meant to be an event for people who have yet to make it to campus, then we may skip it. Thanks in advance for any advice.

My thoughts are there will not be enough new to justify the cost involved, both the $$ and the exam exemption she loses. Since from our other discussions Tulane is already a done deal for her, she should wait and go to Orientation in June. She will still stay in a dorm, although they all stay in Butler, the Honors dorm. At least they did last June. The other advantage is that she will only meet other kids that are 100% going to Tulane, so she might meet a potential roommate. A (now) friend of mine from California that I met during Orientation was there with his son, and the son made some very quick friends and is rooming with one of them. He tells me it is working out great.

So your D will be mad at me for saying this, but save the money and time and plan for June. She’s excited out of her mind, which is understandable, but August comes all too fast.

Thanks fallenchemist. Those were kind of my thoughts, too. One of the main reasons that she wanted to go was she thought that perhaps she might be able to meet a roomate. But, like you said, not everybody that goes to the DT events are definitely going to Tulane and she already knows that Tulane is where she will be. Thanks, again, for your insight.
