Destination UChicago

So recently I was given a provisional acceptance into UChicago’s Class of 2023. Not too long afterward, the Deputy Director of Admissions emailed me to tell me that I’d be receiving a travel grant to come to one of the admitted student’s weekends-- three days long, though, and longer than the admitted student’s weekend I was told about in my LL.

Can anyone give me any more information on what this program entails and how it works? Why was I given this travel grant? I don’t have significant financial need, though I did apply for aid. Just a little confused. Thanks!

They really want you to attend so they are making it as easy as possible.

The admitted students event is Thursday-Friday for most people, but some people with significant financial need, from marginalized backgrounds, or are first gen college students are invited to come one day earlier on Wednesday and stay two nights. They have specific programming on Wednesday to address the specific needs of these groups, and often give travel grants to cover the cost of the flights and to make it as easy as possible to come.

You should ask them for details of how it works (what strings are attached, etc.). You are more likely than not to get outdated or flat out wrong misinformation here since very few posters here have direct experience with getting travel grants to go to admitted student nights but that doesn’t tend to stop people from posting lol.

OP has two parents with grad degrees and one is faculty at WUSTL. She is also a URM so that might account for the invite - or it might be something else altogether. Once UChicago is open again it might be a good idea to contact Admissions directly to see what’s up. It’s clear that they would like OP to join them and if it were me I’d take advantage of the travel grant. However, I’d also check to see what the additional programming consists of, and whether it makes sense to stay the extra day. If it doesn’t, I’d check to see if the travel grant applies anyway

I had a prospie in that program at one point, it’s for URMs. Congrats!
