DETAILED Chances! Georgetown SFS EA, the Dream!!

Ethnicity: White

Gender: Male

EA!

I attend a rigorous college prep school outside of New York City. We send 100 percent of our students to college, and the curriculum is definitely much more difficult than your average high school. Don't mean to sound rude, just throwing that out there.

ACT: 30-32 (Prospective, based on practice tests, etc, lets just assume. I'll probably be using this)
SAT'S: 760 CR, 580 M, 720 W
Sat II's: US History-780 Lit-660 (will take one more, which one is best?)

Class Rank: N/A, school doesn't rank, but, a look at a slightly confusing GPA distribution graph would put me at least in the top 20, if not higher.

I am planning to take what my school calls 'Focus', a year long research project/thesis in something you love. I hope to tackle an aspect of politics and the media, and it would involve writing a 25 page paper first semester and then going out into the field and actually working in that area before presenting this project to a panel of experts.

EC's:
--Student Government (My strongest point):
- President of the Student Body, running uncontested, first time in school history.
- I was the vice-president of the Student Body junior year.
- I was the president of my grade for Freshman and Sophomore year.

I've helped initiate major rule changes, written and delivered big speeches, argued in front of faculty meetings, and been a general advocate for the Student Body.

-I interned for the Barack Obama for President campaign in Paterson, NJ, compiling over 125 hours of service. I was an assistant to the field organizer, and helped run the office, train volunteers, set up and take down events, etc. I was also left in charge of phone banks and canvassing events and helped volunteers sometimes 3 times my age understand how to be a part of the campaign. I was one of four field office administrators in Paterson on Election Day, the only one who happened to be a minor. Great letter of rec from one of my supervisors/field managers. Will also be a focus of my essay.

-National/International Editor of the school newspaper: written extensively on American politics, edited articles, managed lay out of section.

-Play guitar in private lessons, school band, the pit orchestra for the musicals, and small cafes and restaurants.

I am potentially working in the local assembly persons office as well this summer.

I am a tour guide for my school, all four years.

I've run cross country all four years of high school, varsity for three.

My US AP History teacher will be writing my recommendation, and he is also the main faculty adviser to the student government, so he has a double perspective on me, will vouch for me hard. Counselor will do the same. Excellent recs.

I don't know how to explain it, but I have become a sort of natural leader at my school I think any interviews would go well. You guys probably get this a lot, but I feel like my numbers (not a great sophomore year, more B's than A's), and my struggles with SAT I Math are bogging me down from being a really good candidate.

I know my numbers are low, but its just up my alley interest wise and a reach for anybody, so I thought I'd ask.

i like that you show your passion; it’s great. your numbers may be slightly low, but you still have a decent chance. an ACT score of 30-32 will probably be good enough.

chance me back too, please!

thanks! i’m kinda jealous of your ECs! keep up the good work.

Georgetown is going to be a reach with that SAT score. If you get a good ACT score for G-town, then use that if you don’t have time to take the SAT again. Also, you should take the Mathematics SAT II level 2 since most colleges and universities weigh this test in more than most other SAT II’s.

haha, this is sort of cool, since I too am obsessed with the SFS school at Georgetown. Hopefully I will see you there.

Okay, frankly I think your GPA needs to be a bit higher. The good news is that you don’t have any glaring Cs, and you look to be on a consistent, slightly upward trend. I think Georgetown wants something closer to 3.7/3.8.

Since your GPA is a bit low, I 100% recommend applying early action to Georgetown (which you are doing). It is non-binding, and though it has relatively the same acceptance rate, it still shows your interest, plus the acceptance rate for deferred students is actually higher than regular acceptance rate. Your class rank looks pretty good though.

Most of the students who go to Georgetown come from NY or NJ I think, so Georgetown probably knows your school quite well-- therefore they should know how rigorous it is and should mark accordingly. Your course rigor seems relatively solid. I might want to bump it up senior year if you can handle the load.

Now for the main issue: ACT/SAT scores. Georgetown has an average of 31-34 so your ACT would put you on the lower end (though certainly not impossible to get in). The main issue is SAT-- see, Georgetown only looks at Math and CR scores, so your writing score doesn’t matter which is a bummer because you scored well. Georgetown does Score choice so frankly I would blow off CR and blow off writing (studying wise) and focus only on Math to get your score up. I think you should go for a 650 on math since you scored at the top of the spectrum on CR.

ECs are the best part of your application, and I truly believe from what I see here that you would function very well at Georgetown. Just impress them in the interview, write essays about your passions, and try really hard to improve math SAT.

(P.S. I would take Spanish SAT II since it seems you get consistent As in that course, and you are applying to the foreign service school.)

Good luck! And if you have time, you could chance me. Our applications are rather similar.

And if you need any other schools to apply for, may I suggest GW. You could even transfer to GT after one year if you really want to go. You definitely have the numbers for GW.

I had similar stats/activities, denied at GT after deferral.
