<p>ok i know there are a lot of people of german ancestry in wisconsin but are there a good amount of people who speak german as well ? just wondering because im not from wisconsin and never visited before (from california) thanks!</p>
<p>Not in many decades except as learned in school. In the 1930’s the language was around in Milwaukee south side neighborhoods along with Polish- mothers would yell at kids… If the US government had treated the Germans like they treated the Japanese Wisconsin would have had huge numbers interred. Can’t change the past. German heritage exists mainly in ethnic foods available, especially bratwurst.</p>
<p>At UW, however, there are definitely a fair number of opportunities to speak German, if that is your interest.</p>
