Development Studies PhD?

It appears that a lot of schools are now offering development studies, or international development, master's programs. And quite a few seem to offer PhD's in the subject as well. From the standpoint of someone wanting to work in the development field, both would probably make quite a bit of sense, I'm assuming.

My question is, does anyone know whether development studies PhD's are getting hired by universities as professors? If I wanted to hedge my bets and have two possible career paths open to me--academia or development--would this be a viable option?

It seems unlikely that universities would really hire these folks, since most universities don't have development programs, and many that do are merely a synthesis of several departments. For example, the undergrad development program at my school is composed of classes taught by professors from economics, poli sci, health science, nutrition, plant and wildlife science and education. I'm only aware of one person who didn't get their PhD in a subject like that.....but these folks were also in school 10-20 years ago and development studies wasn't as hot a subject then.

Anyone have any experience or know of anyone who has a PhD in development that can comment on the job market in academia, or if one even exists?

anybody?

bump.

Have you looked for placement results on these school’s websites?
