How similar is Development Studies to International Relations?

pretty similar, at my school we have to have a "functional field" of concentration under our international studies degree, and mine is going to be international development... development just looks at more of the third world/economics/etc while international relations is generally country to country relations.. but is basically an umbrella for a wide range of fields

so it's not necessarily better to go into IR just because it's broader? What kind of opportunities are there for DS majors?

Is this Human Development?

no it's like a subset of international relations focusing on developing nations.

I think most undergraduate programs don't have a development major, but just a focus/concentration within the larger international studies major (that's how my school is, and several other good IR schools that I know of). Then if you later get your Masters degree, there are actual complete ID programs for that

plus, if you're not sure about development, don't worry about it, go for the IR degree and try a lot of different types of classes, and see what interests you the most

okay so, as of now i've been accepted to:
University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign
University of Maryland-College Park
Miami of Ohio

still waiting from Northeastern U. (boston)
University of Madison-Wisconsin
and then there are my reach schools nyu and ann arbor.

I want to get into school which will best suit me for my intended career (working w the development of third world countries-world bankish type job)
which of these schools do u think is best for this? Champaign i know isn't big on this but its in state cheap and has a good rep. College park is 20 min from d.c. area, miami of ohio sent me an email about their international studies program, northeastern has an amazing coop program and madison is higly ranked and offers devel. econ. i don't know what to do!! i've tried researching but its hard w such a narrow field. and im mostly looking at public schools. help please!
thanks

oh i also applied to american and george washington uni. but these schools r super expensive. r they really worth it for this field to consider, at least for undergrad?

i think it's GREAT being in DC, even for undergrad - tons of opportunities for speakers, events, jobs, internships, etc. all relating to what you are studying...

American U. is good about merit awards too, if you have really good stats and such (that's where I go now)

hey thanks for the info. so i found this-http://www.cidcm.umd.edu/cidcm_minor.asp

and it seems perfect considering what im going for (my above post) but is this something thats actually unique to umd? do lots of schools offer stuff similar to programs/majors like this? im having major issues comparing schools. out of the schools i applied to which do you guys think is best??
thanks!
