I've been dropped into DGS. According to UIUC website, the class file of DGS is awful.
the greatest students in DGS just scored 30 in ACT.
I am wondering how they filter the DGS students from all the applicants, and why i was dropped me into DGS.

DGS basically exists to help you move into the college of your choice. People who are placed in DGS might be placed there because the program they had initially applied for was full. They also can be placed there if they show promise, but their grade record isn’t outstanding, but shows an upward trend. Getting admitted to UIUC ANYWHERE is an achievement that you should be proud of. Competition is very tough, and it gets more and more difficult to get admitted every year. DGS helps students transition to college life, assists in class selection, and monitors progress.

As a DGS student, you get a chance to prove that you should have been admitted to your program of choice in the first place, and you can take the same classes as those who are in that program already. That’s a win-win, if you ask me.

The problem is your word “their grade record isn’t outstanding”
My Grade record is much better than many of my classmates who have been admitted, including to the program of Engineering or Business

Then I wouldn’t be too worried about it, ChongShu. Have you tried calling the school and asking these questions? Did you apply late? If so, that could indicate that your program was “full” by the time you were accepted.

@boneh3ad
Thanks really much. Indeed, I applied “Late”
but it is not my fault. I definetly mailed my materials using the DHL by the deadline, but AO said they had not got it. So I mail it again. This time, it is “late.”

Whether they can move me into my first choice? How should I do? Appeal? I just want to study Mathematics, not engineering or Business.

You can do that while you’re temporarily in DGS. You won’t be taking classes necessarily with DGS “classmates”. Take the math classes you want. Get a good GPA. Reapply to mathematics after a semester or two.

DGS has two groups of freshman: those who applied undecided and thus automatically were considered for only DGS and those who applied to another college and major and that college chose not to offer admission but the student was still offered admission to DGS. You won’t graduate from DGS. It is there to eventually move you into another college with a major. You will be in DGS for first year. You can then apply to transfer into another college and major for beginning of second year (or you can wait until mid-second year or start of third year to transfer, except for business for which you get one shot at a transfer for beginning of second year). If you want to be a math major, then you should take those courses a usual math major would take in freshman year and as long as grades are decent your chances of moving to A&S college as a math major after first year are very high.

hey! i got a 31 and im in dgs!
