Hi! So, how much more money is the DHS compared to the Presidential scholarship or whatever? I don't know if it's worth taking the time to do the DHS with my stats. I have a 34 act, a 3.9 unweighted and a 4.6 weighted. Do I have a chance for the presidential scholarship? What are the average requirements of a DHS winner? I'm not very creative, so I'm definitely struggling to come up with any idea for the box. Would love to hear from anyone with knowledge or experience!?

The Presidential is fixed at $32,000/year for 4 years (5 for architecture). So as tuition rises, it covers a little bit less of the bill. Of course the Presidential requires no additional application other than your application to get into Tulane, which you seem to already know. You are definitely qualified for the Presidential based on your stats. Obviously it is up to admissions who gets it, but certainly you appear to fit the usual awardee.

The Dean’s Honors Scholarship (DHS) is full tuition PLUS fees for all 4 (5) years, no matter how much they rise. So you are only left paying for room and board, books, and transportation, and of course your personal non-school expenses. The difference in that and the Presidential would be on the order of $15,000 next year I would guess, without looking it up . Maybe even $16-17K. It depends on what tuition and fees will be next year. The gap will increase in your 4 years at Tulane, so overall you are looking at a $65-70K difference over 4 years. It’s not chump change.

The stats Tulane states for qualifications are 33+ ACT and top 5% of the class, having taken a rigorous schedule. So again, you appear to fit the bill. There is also another full tuition + fees merit scholarship, the Paul Tulane Award (PTA). It requires a couple of essays as opposed to a creative project. Perhaps that is more in line with your talents. Last year there were 75 DHS awarded and 50 PTA. As far as I know, those numbers are the same this year. You can apply for both. You need to apply EA or SCEA to Tulane, and have the DHS/PTA applications in by December 15.

Any other questions, ask away.
