Dickinson Q&A

Actually if you log into your portal, the message changed and now says decisions will be out Feb 10th!!

D accepted with Benjamin Rush scholarship. Not sure if she will attend as we are awaiting news from seven other schools.

Accepted, Founders Scholarship, excited to visit in March and decide if this will be my new home.

Congratulations to all that have been accepted! If you have any questions feel free to ask away, I will be as honest as possible!

I was just accepted and I’ll be visiting in a few weeks, but for anyone on here that is currently attending, what made you choose Dickinson? At a certain point many of the small LACs have the same offerings for students. Was it a certain program or was it the feel on campus, or something else? Thanks!

My daughter is a Dickinson freshman. What really sold her on Dickinson was visiting on an accepted students day, even though she had already visited once before. She attended a couple of classes, and met a number of current students and other prospective students. We also attended a local accepted students reception in our area hosted by parents of a current student, and met the admissions rep and some current students and parents. I think she really just felt comfortable with the other students.

My perspective as a parent about how Dickinson differs from other LACs that I visited with my D:
1. A greater focus on the “practical liberal arts”, and post-college career opportunities. Some of the LACs we visited seemed very impractical to me. Dickinson seems to have a good career center and alumni network, and good job placement track record (and grad school placement).
2. Global focus - excellent study abroad programs, and foreign language offerings, and just a general emphasis of global issues
 3. Excellent facilities. Most LACs have pretty campuses, but some that we visited were pretty on the outside but shabby on the inside. Dickinson impressed me with how up-to-date the interiors of building were, with excellent classroom and lab facilities. My daughter’s dorm is also very nice with quite impressive common areas. There are a number of new buildings on campus, and many older buildings have been recently refurbished. The library is amazing, with lots of windows and natural light.
 4. Diversity of the student body, in several different dimensions of diversity. None of the northeast LACs have great racial diversity, but Dickinson seemed a bit better than others. There also seemed to be more variety of student interests, with no particular “type” of Dickinson student dominating. (Some other LACs were very greek dominated, or very artsy, or very athletic, etc.) This variety is good for my D who has diverse interests.
 5. Environmental focus. This wasn’t a particularly important factor for my D, but she appreciates some of the little things, like how all of the students carry reusable water bottles and how there are special water fountains all over campus that make it really easy to refill water bottles.

Good luck with your decision.

Great description, Sacchi. It closely matches my perception as well of how Dickinson compares to other LACs after my D graduated. I think my D was sold by how friendly the other students were when she attended classes on campus. She visited 20 (!) colleges, and went to classes at most of them. She said there were very few where the students greeted her, asked if she was visiting, and chatted before and after class. She really liked that about Dickinson when she visited.

Hi! I am an international student who just got accepted into D and I heard there are only about thirty or very few Chinese students there, am I correct?
