Hey,
I applied to a summer research program that just happens to be in University of Iowa, and i got an email YESTERDAY saying i was accepted and i have until this friday to accept or decline the offer!!! This is the first acceptance letter i got, but i still want to wait and hold out until i hear back from other summer programs.

But this seem like a good opportunity b/c someone said doing research is better than taking classes in MIT or Carnegie Mellon (applied to MIT MITES and CMU SAMS and AP/EA). So, i sent an email back them, asking for time extension four weeks later. ahhhh!!! so what should i do?? if they say no time extension??? This could be my only acceptance letter b/c i might be rejected by all other later summer programs. so, could anyone tell me about Iowa SSTP, if u attended it? Oh, Iowa asked me to do the Speech Pathology department.

Yeah I applied too, but I haven't heard back yet =[. When did you apply? I applied right at the deadline so hopefully they got it in time. Sorry I don't really know anything about the program beyond what is on the website.

I mailed it out right before the deadline, and obviously, it got there, even i think the mail reached there beyond March 7th. I got response two days ago, asking me if i would like to work in a speech pathology lab. oh welll.....should i go ahead with this??

I applied also and got the same e-mail, saying they needed a response by April 2nd. Except I was put in the electro-chemistry lab....
But I have the same issue, I am still waiting to hear from other places, which I'll be notified by Apr. 11th. But let me know if they give you a time extension pleaasee...

what???? The program coordinator said March 30, which meant tomorrow??? he did gave me time extension, but only two days from March 28. Is everybody's reply time is different? WHat happens if i don't reply by tomorrow? It's not like i check my email everyday.
Yeah, me too, some by April 11th. But there's aplace i might want to go, if i got accepted, to work in the Los Alamos National Laboratory in NM.
Do u know what students really do inthe lab?? do they do their own original research?

Yeahhh...I guess they accepted me after you, so they gave me a bit more time... I actually have no idea what students do. Which is why I sent an e-mail to the dude in charge asking for a contact of someone who did SSTP last year, and hopefully I'll get the e-mail and respond. I mean I'd like to wait 2 weeks, but I doubt he'll give me that long. But more importantly, there are other places I'd want to go also, places that are a about a thousand miles east of the mid-west....

ooo. yeah, i see now. If the dude respond back, you u please post it here?
I feel the same way, i might want to so somewhere too, about a thousand miles west of the midwest. Where do u live? I live in CT, so i guess there's somewhere you want to be (New England).
check this out:

it's about a person's experience in SSTP previous years b4, but that's the only thing i got from the internet. so let me know what u think.
Can we just accept the offer, and then change our mind later on if something "better" turn up? we could make up the excuse of saying " sorry, something just turned up and i'm not able to attend this summer"...?

the link with aterisk in it should be "scholar holler", with no space between them

Nice find...the power of the internet...
I live in NJ, and I'm waiting on gov. school in the sciences for NJ and a program at Cornell. I mean, I was hoping there would be like a deposit or something, so we could just pay that and pull out if something "better" turned up ya know?
Swainy didn't respond yet to my e-mail, but I'm kinda hoping he doesn't respond for quite a few days so I can ask for more time so that I can have to time to contact whoever he tells me to.
I mean it's not exactly the "right" thing to do, but pulling out could work. What are they going to do, arrest us?

thanks, cartmansfat. are u online now? we could IM each other. hey, I moved from NJ early feb!! which part of NJ? i used to live in Florham Park.
Yeah, i applied to NJ governor school on the envrionment, but i can't attend it b/c i'm not in nj anymore. I applied to Cornell too, on the nanobiotechnology internship, but i don't think i want to go to that one.
idk about deposit for iowa SSTP, and i prob still have to reply by tomorrow.
i know it's not the right thing to do, but hey, if life offers us something better, we should take it, not be held down. i know they might not be happy, but it's not like i'm going to apply to that program again.

yeahh my AIM is yanks0128
IM me whenever we can talk...i'm usually on even if my a/m is tehre.

that makes 3 of us from NJ...im glad to hear that not everyone got accepted at the same time, because that means i might not necessarily be rejected.

hey cranland, did u get an email acceptance from Iowa? which field u want to do?

no i didn't get any email from them yet. i emailed Mr. Swain a few days ago to update him on a few recent accomplishments since I applied...if I get in I want to do something physics/engineering related.

oooo...I guess the prof is still looking over ppl.

bump*****
Has anybody still been accepted into UIowa's SSTP program??

I got the mail from Swainster!!!!!!!

Mr.Swain still has me on his waiting list. He says that so far 10 have been admitted and he will admit 15 more. And that my application looks good and he is trying to place me in the lab. Let's see what happens.
He told me that he would give me the decision in week that ended last friday. SO hopefully, I'll get the decision this week.
Where else you folks have applied ?
I got admitted in Stanford University EPGY but they were asking $3000 for three weeks so I didn't attend. I still have the entrance test of HCSSIM with me but I don't think that I can handle maths for six weeks.
AND I got rejected from SSP, and Honors Math Camp at Texas Tech.

Hopefully I will make it to this one as Swain has reassured that "I have rejected quiet a few, but you are still in the running"

Those who got offer for pathology lab, what did you write in the subject option?. Chemistry??? or Biology????

zainykhas, how did you contact Mr. Swain? I emailed him about a month ago but I still haven't heard back.
