I know, when I read the topic the first thing I thought was "oh boy, they are going to get tons of essays on Muslims in America and Iraq War and discrimination still alive today blah blah" so I carefully avoided that. Sounded like someone else was just as smart :-) Yay for us. I wrote about how humanity itself is timeless and compassion for others...and I told the story of my dad's suffering in comparison to Elie's and how they are heros and messangers to us. I don't know....I'm dyin'. I just hope my essay actually got there. It got picked up the 6th...hopefully postmarked that day!!

we are awesome :D

i think that our essays are slightly similar, though you had your father's experience to draw on...I talked a bit about the ice storm that hit here last january

Good luck, as always! I keep bugging my mom everday about her e-mail and everyday it's the same answer: no news!! Those Oprah people need to stick to their promises. Perhaps they think that telling us the trip is a week from yesterday was enough advance notice, even if they notify the winners a day before or something? The suspense is killing me!!!! :p

my essay was about how modern media desensitizes us from complete understanding through facts and statistics. its more of a political science type essay. i bet they are gonna laugh real hard when they read the footnotes. I cited "Bolsheviks and War: Zimmerwald Manifesto" by Sam Marcy.

i sent mine through next day air. it cost 15 bucks :( ...................but at least i know it got there through tracking.

we should find out soon on the winners......

shoot IF I KNEW ABOUT A OPRAH ESSAY CONTEST I WOULD HAVE DEFINITELY JOINED.... I WOULD HAVE WROTE ABOUT HOW OPRAH DOES THINGS FOR PEOPLE JUST TO PROMOTE HERSELF AND NOT CARING ABOUT THEM AT ALL....FOREXAMPLE TWO YEARS AGO SHE GAVE HER AUDIENCE BRAND NEW CARS... TURNS OUT THE TAX ON THE CAR WAS GREATER THAN THE CARS SO EVERYONE WAS SCREWED AND THEY HAD TO PAY IT BECAUSE THEY ACCEPTED IT... WHAT A RETARDED WOMAN AND HOW SAD FOR THE PEOPLE WHO HAD NO MONEY TO PAY THE TAX...TSK TSK TSK

Oh I'm sure Oprah gets plenty of abuse similar to the above without any further help from you; now, if you have nothing nice to say, kindly leave this thread...the conversation was perfectly decent and constrructive until you came along.

That was a weird post. Broken Caps lock key eh? Oh and I agree that Oprah sucks.

i will say whatever i want, whenever i feel like it.... dont like it, DEAL WITH IT!

You are the man!

ok. lol. um...bestmiler1...YOU RUINED MY POST! :-P

tuba guy, your essay sounds awesome! great thinking! I assume with 50 winners they will take the best 50 from every kind of topic. That one sounds so unique it will probably win! It better...for 15 bucks! AGH!

BestMill...true you can write as you pls but you should check your facts...the tax on the cars were not more than the price of the car (common sense should be your guide), second of all, the people who received the prize, had the option to sell the car or pay the taxes (you know that thing that Uncle Sam insist on getting) and even after the Oprah production company offered to pay the taxes on the cars for anyone who could not, the tax man still came calling...that is life. Yes, Oprah production company/Oprah/Car dealership all profit from the press that they got out of the give-away, just like Time Warner, Coke, Microsoft, etc. scholarship programs--they all profit from the explosure. As a matter of fact the more they profit the bigger the scholarship offers.

Guys, the Rules stated that they were selecting semifinalists on or around February 13th and the winners on or around February 16th. So, it's over :) (or should be, anyway)

I did it for English class (it exempted from the final, and it turned out to be fun to write, mostly) and sent it in. Didn't get anything...not that I expected to. I barely proofread, and I guess we were supposed to title it? And cite things? Yeah. I thought it was pretty good writing by my own standards, but you'd have to be drunk to select that as a winner.

By the way, the prize isn't all that inspiring. I don't want to miss any more school than I have already, and it's non-monetary, so it's not going to make paying for college any easier.

thanks for clearing that up, zoogies :)

you think its really over? when are they gonna announce winners then?

According to the Oprah Book Club message board, they haven't notified the winners yet.

aaaaargh

then there's hope yet, everyone :D

I doubt mine was good enough to win though, but it was a great chance to read the book

Wow, they're running very late. But I believe they don't notify non-winners - is that correct? You have to send a postcard or something.

ain't over 'til its over guys!! Just watched Oprah. The preview for the monday show is about Barbie. That's the show that was supposed to be the winner's show.

O man.

I need to know.

like...today.

I entered this contest too and am a little disappointed that I still have not heard anything:( Seems a little unorgainzed. I did however use my Google skills to find the personal blog of one of the essay graders. It's kinda fun to read about some of the essays she writes about...http://therealpeterman.blogspot.com/

If you won, you would've heard by now. I didn't submit an essay, but my friend did, and she won - she was notified about a week ago.

Edit: And, according to her, the show was pushed back for a couple of weeks because of standardized testing, or something like that.

Illusion...I'm not sure your right. My friend called Harpo yesterday and they said the winners hadn't been notified.
