I got a letter and a e-mail from Rice about two or three weeks ago saying that my application fee will be waivered because of "my excellence in AP test".

Is this a joke? I really don't have to hand in the application fee?

I got a letter and a e-mail from Rice about two or three weeks ago saying that my application fee will be waivered because of "my excellence in AP test".

Is this a joke? I really don't have to hand in the application fee?

no its not a joke and YES its real...

the rice admin officer said though that they don't take into account ap scores when deciding whether or not to admit you, they only use it for placement

So do I just send in the letter instead of a check for the application?

no i think they will have your name in their system saying that your waived. Im not sure but you can send in the letter just in case

^ what if you're applying online?

They have the info on file at the admissions office. Just apply on-line and don't pay a fee.

that's cool. I wish I could get one of those. I had to pay for my own app.
What scores did you get?

I don't want to go to detail. But I am an AP Scholar with Distinction.

Huh. I'm a Scholar with Distinction too and I didn't get a waiver. Bummer.

Werid I got one of those too and I'm only AP Scholar. I didn't even do that good on my APs 3/4/4 but one of them was like 3 years ago lol

I don't think Rice knows I'm applying. I mean, I've started the application, but how would they know that? I'm just an AP Scholar (without distinction), but they wouldn't know to send me a fee waiver anyway I would think. Unless they get names from another source...

They get the names from the collegeboard. I think if you don't agree to receive info about colleges from them, then rice wouldn't have your name.

I got one of those too, and I'm still trying to figure out how to "redeem" my waiver. So far I've applied for a fee waiver through the Common App and clicked "Other" in the "Type" box. I e-mailed the admissions office and they just gave me this stock response about demonstrating financial need and the SAT fee waiver and such; nothing addressing my specific question.

I'm probably going to call them sometime soon. I'll see if you can keep you guys updated.

NOTE: My AP scores were 4/4/4.

The email that I got said: "Congratulations on your designation as a high scorer on the PSAT, and thank you for listing Rice as one of your top two college choices with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

In recognition of your status as a high scorer, Rice will waive the $60 application fee. This fee waiver has automatically been added to your computer record at Rice. No additional action is required on your part. Just apply for admission!

Rice is an exclusive user of the Common Application. My staff and I look forward to getting to know you better throughout your senior year. Feel free to contact us whenever you have questions about Rice.

Yours sincerely,"

I've looked at the one I got for AP tests and it doesn't say that bolded bit... strange.

The way my son did it a few years ago was not to send a payment through the commonapp. Rice knows who will be receiving the fee waiver, so you just don't have to send a payment. You can call them to confirm if you want, but that's what he did and it worked fine.

Never hesitate to call the financial aid folks with a question. They stay busy, but we've always gotten good responses from them. When you DO call, just keep in mind that they (and ALL college admissions people EVERYWHERE) probably keep a record of correspondence with EVERYONE, so remember to be professional & respectful. (It never helps to bite the hand that feeds.)

I called Rice's financial aid office... guy was a major *******. I had to drag the information out of him for some reason.

It could have been a student worker who may not have known much....

I did. If you guys still have questions what to do for the APP on the Commonapp website, all you have to do is submit the commonapp and supplement, then you pick "other" fee waiver
