I got a letter today from the Dean of Admissions saying that a current student had recommended me "as an ideal candidate for Davidson" and that if I have any questions to contact him directly.

Does this mean anything?
Should I contact him directly with my questions?

I think this letter reflects part of a new program in admissions to encourage current Davidson students to suggest high school students that they think would be a good fit for Davidson. You should certainly contact the student directly if you have any questions; the student can always refer you to admissions or another person or department if he/she is unable to answer.

This email was sent to Davidson Sophmores on 10/18, I'm assumeing it was also sent to the other classes as well.

Dear Class of 2009,

I recently had a conversation with Chris Gruber, our Vice President and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid, about the fact that the finest ambassadors for Davidson are the students who call this place home. Time and again we find that prospective students become enrolled students because they have engaged one of you during a visit to this campus. We went on to decide that each of you knows best what is required to be a member of this community - the attitudes, the talents, the strength, the drive. As a result of that conversation, it occurred to us that you probably can better suggest prospective students than any standardized test or high school G.P.A.

Therefore, I would ask a favor of each of you - and that is that you suggest those high school seniors whom you know would both benefit from four years here, and would make this a better place. If you would send the name and address (or e-mail address) of any such student to Chris at ..., he commits himself to sending a personal note to each one within a week of receiving the name from you. This is an important contribution you could make to Davidson, and I would be very grateful for your help in this matter.

One name (or more, if they come to mind) would be so helpful. I appreciate your thoughtful assistance.

So recieving a letter like this is a good thing. I think in a Davidsonian article it was said that about 10% of students reccomended someone. So thts about 170 letters that went out. There are many people you can contact with questions about Davidson, your friend, us, or admissions etc.
