Did anyone else get this letter?

I received this letter today

February 2, 2007

Dear ___________.

Thank you for your application to the University of Southern California. I wanted to give you an update on our process. However, before I continue, I want to make clear that we have not yet reached a decision on you application; you are still being considered for admission to USC.

A record number of students have applied for our merit scholarship programs. For the Trustee and Presidential scholarship, we have narrowed a pool of over 17,000 December 11th applicants to the group of 1,200 who will proceed to the next phase of consideration for these awards.

___________, I am sorry to say that you were not selected for further consideration for either of these two scholarships. In addition, if you are admitted, named as National Merit Finalist and choose USC as your first-choice institution, you will receive a USC Presidential scholarship.

We expect to offer admission to roughly 8,400 freshman. So far, we have notified only about 15% of those students, which leaves plenty of room for great candidates. I appreciate your patience as you wait for us to finish this hard work during the coming weeks.

We will not have much more news for you about you application until late-March/early-April, when the remainder of our admissions offers are finalized. Between now and then we will spend a great deal of time reading, re-reading, and carefully considering which candidates should receive an invitation to enroll. If you haven' already done so please submit the grades you earned from the first marking period of your senior year.

Thank you for applying to USC. You'll be hearing from us soon.

Sincerely,
Timothy E. Brunold

to me this kinda sounds like a rejection letter...did anyone else get this letter?

this is just a no scholarships letter. a few other people in the other threads received this yesterday. It's not a rejection, they're still considering you for admission just not for Pres/Trustees

i got it also but i have no idea what it means

If you applied by the Dec 11th deadline, this is just a letter saying that you are not being considered for Pres/Trust. That's all it is. IT doesn't have to do with you being rejected. It's simply that you're not being considered/interviewed for those two scholarships.

You will get a decision in March with the rest of the applicants. So don't lose hope. =]

If you don't receive this letter, would that be an indication that you may be getting a Presidential or Trustee?

As I see it now, there are three groups of applicants:

1) Admitted, and are in running for Presidential/Trustee scholarship
2) Admitted
3) Not admitted, and not in running for Presidential/Trustee scholarship

So perhaps there are more Presidential/Trustee on the way? Because if group 3 has the option for other scholarships, why wouldn't USC just have sent group 2s admission letters with group 3s?

Clearly I'm in group 2, I'm being (overly) optimistic, and I'm hoping that I may be in running for Trustee/Presidential :)

Ahh, I received this letter too. I hope I get one of the smaller scholarships at least! :)

yeah Foil_, that was what I was thinking.... being as I was admitted during the second wave (got letter Monday, live in MA)... could this possibly mean that I have a shot at Pres. and Trustee?

I hope so! Because then I would have a shot too :D

This made me smile. It means:

you are still being considered for admission to USC.

[/quote]

and

and

Seems pretty darn clear to me.

^^^ What he said. You are NOT being rejected, but you are NOT getting the big2 scholarships. USC is just being helpful and informing you of what exactly is going on at the Admission's office so you aren't as panicky and in the unknown.

Looks like more than one type of letter went out. My son received one but it did not say anything about scholarships. Just asked him to immediately send in his mid-term grades and that he was still being considered for admission. He is also a NMSF (principal is out of town so he won't know finalist status until next week).

^^this letter seems to be worse than the letter that foil got. it seems like they he is on the border if he has to send his midyears immediately. i repeat, usc is really dumb for not having a reliable admissions update site. every school has one. i cant believe they dont.

ridewitbd24: I've actually been accepted, just with no scholarship so far. I think you meant calivi3tgurl...

i got both..the request for mid year grades and the no scholarship! where am i standing?

i got this letter last year. i still got a Deans' scholarship though...that was nice :p

I got this letter also. Does that mean we're better off than the people who just got the request for MDY grades?

SO i got a MDY report does this mean im on the border of getting rejected already??????

i have a 4.595 cumalative and a 2060

i got a 4.67 first sem as a snr

I hope i am not on the verge of getting rejected!!!!! I really want to go to this school

This letter is no big deal...it just means you're not one of the "big big" scholarships. My daughter rec'd this letter last January but was admitted in the next wave, March 1st, and also received a nice (though smaller) merit scholarship along with her need-based aid.

Good luck!

I did not do well in one of my AP classes...should I write an explanation or just send it in and hope it does not matter too much...the AP has nothing to do with my selected major and its AP Spanish...WHAT SHOULD I DO?

^ I have the same question...
