Did anyone else receive a letter encouraging them to apply?

In April, 2008, I received a letter from Yale congratulating me for my success so far and telling me they identified me as a student who may be a good candidate for Yale. It was two-sided, on really nice paper, and signed by the Dean of Admissions. Did anyone else receive this letter? I know that it doesn't really matter at this point, but I am holding on to the small hope that my early interest/visits to Yale (in middle school) followed by the letter may be a good sign. All application processes aside, of course.

I got that too. It WAS really nice paper :)

I remember getting something like that, too.

*But I don’t think it matters, unfortunately :/

Not to burst your bubble, but like all these sorts of mailings, it’s marketing. Yale’s is just somewhat classier than the usual glossy brochure sent out by college marketing firms. You probably have standardized test scores above a certain level, and Yale has bought those names from the College Board/ACT.

I received that letter…and got deferred SCEA. I don’t think it means anything more than the other 903928409328 pieces of mail we received after taking the PSAT.

haha i agree. i got that letter and at the time i wasnt all “wow Yale” but soon thereafter, i just HAD to go to Yale. i applied SCEA thinking i was all special and they wanted me, but no, it as all a scam (i got deferred). I warn you, dont fall for all the Yale madness. It is so sickening. Also, DONT get their viewbooks. Those are also sickening. Just maintain a distance between yourself and Yale from now until next year!

Vicky_sky, are you speaking in earnestness? I’m having difficulty deciphering whether you’re being sarcastic or not. But their viewbook is really pretty. Really really pretty.

agreed with the posts above- got the letter and it was a post-PSATer

I sort of agree with Vicky: I got extremely attached to Cornell and applied ED to Human Ecology only to be deferred. Then, I started really falling in love with Yale but subsequently realizing that my chances of admissions were quite low.
The moral of the story: don’t get super attached to a college as difficult to get into as Yale, love it from a distance (like me)!

I never got a letter from Yale… the first piece of post I got from them by snail mail was the acceptance package… :)

I REALLY agree with the above statement. Who ever is running Yale’s marketing is doing a heck of a job, the letter I got from Yale was amazing and was VERY integral in getting me to apply to any top school. When I read the letter I was really stunned and thought how amazing it was that a school like Yale would even consider me. I was initally only going to apply to my state U, but after that letter, my teacher’s advice, and learning about their finanical aid program I decided to apply.

I also ordered that view book and had it in my backpack perpetually for a very long time, I don’t know how Yale does it, but from the materials they send it certainly made me want to go to Yale.

I also got that letter. It was really nice paper.

Yale looks for potential applicants in this way.
It is like looking for a match on match.com

ON the PSAT, you checked off some boxes
Student whose parents make $50,000 a year. 5 million results
Student whose parents make $50,000 a year and has 2100 and above 20,000 results
SEND THEM LETTERS

My life. is a scam. QQ ■■■.

I also got a letter, and have to admit was elated. But unfortunately, I too was deferred early. It’s marketing and is clearly effective since many of the people posting here seem to agree that it sparked their interest in some way or another.

I was going to apply to Yale either way.
YALE!
OMG I am so nervous now

Well I got letters and things from Columbia and Yale both of which i would have applied to, and two schools that have amazing paper. Unfortuantely Columbia was in NYC and did not seem to have a cohesive campus feel from what I read so it was a no-go for Columbia, but Yale is another story.

Marketing… smells like WUSTL…

Any college worth its salt recruits students vigorously. Harvard sends out 70,000 letters a year

so it wouldn’t surprise me to hear that Yale sends quite a few.

Good luck to all of you waiting for admission news.
