or other same colleges have potential names like that. i was just wondering ,if they only accept straight-As people.. gosh this CC site is killing someone's dream.loll

well, none of us would ever know if someone got into Harvard just because they got all A's......it's a holistic admission process and admission officers can admit whoever they like....so you might want to rephrase your question.

hey but I wouldn't be surprised if they admitted someone who was extremely strong only academically.

Yes, in 1973 due to a computer crash Harvard admitted one student with two B's and one C on his transcript. They haven't repeated that error again for the general pool applicants. If you are well-connected, of course, you don't need to have all A'.

There was a discussion on another thread about how in some schools in Korea the transcripts for US-Ivy-bound kids showed only A's. See the article:
http://www.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_national/176484.html

People have certainly gotten into Harvard with B's, C's and probably even D's on their transcripts. It all depends on how hard the school/class is, plus of course outside factors like extracurriculars. If you're doing cutting-edge scientific research over the summer and get a B in an AP class at a hard school, it won't hurt you much. Harvard may still reject you, but it won't be for the B. If the only reason Harvard should take you is for your grades, and you get a C in an easy class at a lower-end public high school, it will be a lot worse.

D's seem to be a no-go, but one or two C's probably won't kill you.

On the other hand, GPA and chances have a correlational relationship. The higher your grades, the more likely you are to get into your choices. Ivy admit rates for valedictorians are nearly double the regular rate.

There was a kid in my school who was accepted to harvard and then proceeded to get very low grades in all of his classes. Low grades meaning high 60's in one class. My schools administration had to fight so they wouldnt deny the kid acceptance but he got end up going. Keep in mind this kid was an absolute genius.

There was an article in the Boston Globe a couple of months ago about a girl who was a star basketball player and ranked 3rd in her class. She went to an inner-city high school near Boston, and came from a very poor (possibly immigrant?) family. She was tenacious and hard working and would be the first in her family to go to college. She was turned down by Harvard, supposedly because she had ONE C on her transcript. Other top schools courted her, she ended up going to Stanford on scholarship. And they didn't even recruit her for basketball! She had decided to try out as a walk-on anyway. She was also accepted and offered money at several other top schools.

I had a C in math my freshman year, a B in math sophomore year and a B+ in Spanish first semester junior year, and I got in. A few bad grades aren't going to kill you, especially if you show an upward trend/go to a difficult high school.

Yes.

thequaker, congrats!!!! u must be a very impressive person, any other stats besides your grades? i mean ,u didn't donate 10000 million bucks to them huh...

what i've noticed is most of people they didn't say "yes u have abs. NO chance to get in hyp if u have a BCs" but they meant it. hah, it's a really bad thing that people rjust working really hard on their grades and ecs and finally got rejected . what the hell does Harvard want? what kind of student? there's certain people who has 5.0 ,2400 and some other nice-looking ecs ,but don't get in.: (

I just finished The Chosen and it is pretty clear what they want. They want to educate future business and political leaders of our nation.

It's hollistic review so own't be a sole reason...

I am in a similar boat. I’m currently taking university courses (for the past two years I’ve been doing this) and got a B in Advanced French (and I’m from Quebec and went to an English high school school so it was hard for me in CEGEP cause i was with mother tongue french people) and a C+ in Quantum Mechanics. I got a C+ in Organic Chemistry as well but that’s eons above the class average of like 69, and a C in calculus first semester I because I didn’t take precal unlike everyone else in my class (stupidest decision ever - they wanted to skip me because I got a 99 in math in high school and i let them… stupid stupid stupid!) but then second semester for Cal II and the semester after for linear I got an A and a B+ respectively. I go to a really hard school where everyone in my class is a high school valedictorian (I’m in CEGEP). I’m taking seven to eight classes per semester, all university level, and am known at my school as the “Extra-Curricular Queen”. I am a published author, did research with and shadowed a chief of staff/professor, work as an EMT for red cross, wrote a play that was put on at my school, work as a vocal coach, teach musical theatre and improv to kids at the community center and well, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. My EC/awards sheet is 6 pages long and I’m MENSA.

All my other grades not mentioned were A’s and A+s except in gym where I got C’s. In high school I got ALL A’s and graduated valedictorian with a 95 average. I also took university courses over the summer and scored A’s in all of them as well.

So I’m worried my B’s and C’s will kill me because I’m an otherwise excellent candidate (good SATs, AMAZING refs, good connections with the school, a killer essay, etc.). I know I oveloaded myself on EC’s first year CEGEP because I had a 95 average and figured “how hard could it be to get all A’s again? I NEED TO BOOST MY EC’s if i ever wanna stand a chance”

How screwed am I?

@futurephysician. You’re #$%#ed. Start looking at community colleges.

I got into STanford a few days ago with four Bs

Hi, I actually had straight A’s until junior year first semester where I received 1 C in lit. and 2 B’s. My uw gpa is still 3.88 and weighted is 4.36
I improved drastically second semester.

However, there is a reason behind the sudden fall in grades as my parents were getting into a VERY ugly divorce and my brother was failing 7th grade. So, I had to devote a lot of time to my brother to keep him on track with academics.

I have been told I have outstanding EC’s and community service (up to 900 hours). Do I still stand a chance?

PS im asian

bump 10 char

Don’t you just love nay-sayers? /rolls eyes

Yes, you should be fine.

Never mind.

Of course I’m kidding, you look to have an OK chance if your scores and EC’s/essays are up to par.
