did anyone get this email?

I received this email today:

"Greetings from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We’re writing today to ask you to mark your calendar for a special event on Tuesday, April 11, 2006. You have been invited to this event because you have been selected as a finalist for a merit-based scholarship. Your selection recognizes both your exemplary achievements and your outstanding promise, and we hope that you will see it as a sign of our strong interest in you as a student. As part of this daylong event, you and other prospective scholars will have the opportunity to participate in discussions with distinguished members of the Carolina faculty. Your contributions will be an important part of the selection committee’s deliberations as they make their final decisions about scholarships.

You will soon receive a formal invitation and a reply card with more details, but in the meantime, please reserve the date of Tuesday, April 11, 2006 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact... (signature, etc.)

Does anyone know which scholarship this is for or any other details? I was just wondering if there was any reason for them not to say in the email. Thanks.

This is a somewhat new take on this.

Generally this is for the more significant awards. I have mentioned on other posts that they annually host two special Explore Carolina sessions for the students they are really trying to woo. These are the only sessions in the past that included overnights in a dorm. It's an all day affair for you and parents where they more or less roll out the red carpet.

Congratulations...you now know you are in and that they plan to throw nice $$ at you as well. Good deal!!

i know someone that went down earlier this week for interviews for a scholarship. they must have several different types of scholarships and interview people at different times based on the award.

soccergrl, was that person an NC resident

No, OOS. And from what they said, it sounded like most people there were OOSers.

could have been Morehead?

NCGuy, this award is for the Carolina Scholars, Davie Scholars, Johnson Scholars, Old Well Scholars, etc. I went to this weekend for the EA applicants. It's kinda fun! It's to determine which scholarship you get...based on your performance in discussions and a small essay you write. You get a nice lunch and a free copy of the summer reading book for freshmen. Like a week later, they tell you what award you got. 100 of the kids there were in state, and like 25 were OOS....if you want more info just let me know...

oh, i guess i didn't get one then. oh well.

Hey all,

I misplaced my invitation letter for April 11, and now I have questions ....

Could you, please, send me phone number and a name of a person who signed the invitation letter?

Thanks.

thanks, sailbondy... So does being invited mean that you will get some scholarship for sure, or is there a chance that you may not be selected to get any of those scholarships?

I think it's safe to say you will get some $ (btw did you get an invitation to the honors program?)...but don't quote me

here's the answer to my above question...I know a few people who also attended the same event for Early Notification Admits, and they told me that everyone gets some $...Carolina just has to decide who gets full tuition (i think it was about 20 or so from the 125), who gets ~$5000/year, and so on...
